Design using self-assembled monolayers

Preparation of a multilayer is possible using the self-assembled mono-layer method and appropriate molecular design (Fig. 4.37). In this method, a trichlorosilane amphiphile with a long chain terminated in a double bond was used as the monolayer component. This compound was hydrolyzed to silanol to provide a self-assembled monolayer that covalently immobihzed to... [Pg.106]

There are various potential applications of photophysical phenomena in analytical chemistry. The relatively short lifetimes of most excited states, however, is a serious drawback to the construction of practical devices but studies which focus on finding ways to extend triplet lifetimes have now been described by Harriman et al. Kneas et al. have examined new types of luminescent sensor on polymer supports, and both Neurauter et al. and Marazuela et al. have designed sensors based on the ruthenium(II) polypyridine complex for the detection of carbon dioxide. A system, based on the formation of twisted intramolecular charge transfer states, has been devised for measuring the molecular weight of polymeric matrices (Al-Hassan et a/.), and the chemical reactivity at the interface of self-assembled monolayers has been assessed using fluorescence spectroscopy (Fox et al). [Pg.2]

So far, we have shown that redox-modulated recognition, a prevalent feature in biological systems, can be employed in the design of functional devices. As mentioned earher, one challenge to the efficient application of such systems is the ability to immobilize, order and thus individually address them. One way to provide the desired anisotropy is through the use of colloids functionalized with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). " In a recent model smdy, a diacyl diaminopyri-dine-functionahzed gold colloid (DAP-Au), capable of binding flavin, has been... [Pg.333]

These nanometer-thick layers are easily fabricated from commercially available substances, or can at least be synthesized with relative ease [4]. The first applications of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) for biosensor use were described in the late 1980s and originally developed for Biacore instruments [5,6]. Hydroxyl-terminated long chain thiol alkanes were designed for the formation of the SAM on gold. Such layers can be activated for direct Hnkage of various molecules or further derivatized with different chemistries... [Pg.119]
