III. Derivatives from Multiconfiguration Self-Consistent-Field Wave Functions... 

Complete multiconfiguration-self consistent-field (CMC-SCF) technique designates the method where a given occupied molecular orbital of the set is excited to all unoccupied molecular orbitals. If an occupied orbital is excited to one or more, but not all, of the unoccupied orbitals, the technique is described as incomplete MC-SCF (IMC-SCF). The reader is referred to refs. 13 and 14 for details of the derivation. The CMC-SCF formalism differs from most many body techniques presented to date insofar as the Hartree-Fock energy is not assumed to be the zero order energy.

The various response tensors are identified as terms in these series and are calculated using numerical derivatives of the energy. This method is easily implemented at any level of theory. Analytic derivative methods have been implemented using self-consistent-field (SCF) methods for a, ft and y, using multiconfiguration SCF (MCSCF) methods for ft and using second-order perturbation theory (MP2) for y". The response properties can also be determined in terms of sum-over-states formulation, which is derived from a perturbation theory treatment of the field operator — [iE, which in the static limit is equivalent to the results obtained by SCF finite field or analytic derivative methods. 

The wave function of fragment A, ll a, can either be a single determinant from HF theory or Kohn-Sham DFT, or a multiconfiguration wave function derived from complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) or valence bond (VB) calculations.
