Within the periodic Hartree-Fock approach it is possible to incorporate many of the variants that we have discussed, such as LFHF or RHF. Density functional theory can also be used. I his makes it possible to compare the results obtained from these variants. Whilst density functional theory is more widely used for solid-state applications, there are certain types of problem that are currently more amenable to the Hartree-Fock method. Of particular ii. Icvance here are systems containing unpaired electrons, two recent examples being the clci tronic and magnetic properties of nickel oxide and alkaline earth oxides doped with alkali metal ions (Li in CaO) [Dovesi et al. 2000]. 

Density functional theory (DFT) has become very popular in recent years. This is justified based on the pragmatic observation that it is less computationally intensive than other methods with similar accuracy. This theory has been developed more recently than other ah initio methods. Because of this, there are classes of problems not yet explored with this theory, making it all the more crucial to test the accuracy of the method before applying it to unknown systems.

Prior to the widespread usage of methods based on Density Functional Theory, the MP2 method was one of the least expensive ways to improve on Hartree-Fock and it was thus often the first correlation method to be applied to new problems. It can successfully model a wide variety of systems, and MP2 geometries are usually quite accurate. Thus, MP2 remains a very useful tool in a computational chemist s toolbox. We ll see several examples of its utility in the exercises. 

How well does Density Functional Theory model this problem ... 

The ab initio methods used by most investigators include Hartree-Fock (FFF) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) [6, 7]. An ab initio method typically uses one of many basis sets for the solution of a particular problem. These basis sets are discussed in considerable detail in references [1] and [8]. DFT is based on the proof that the ground state electronic energy is determined completely by the electron density [9]. Thus, there is a direct relationship between electron density and the energy of a system. DFT calculations are extremely popular, as they provide reliable molecular structures and are considerably faster than FFF methods where correlation corrections (MP2) are included. Although intermolecular interactions in ion-pairs are dominated by dispersion interactions, DFT (B3LYP) theory lacks this term [10-14]. FFowever, DFT theory is quite successful in representing molecular structure, which is usually a primary concern. 

Fischer-type carbene complexes, generally characterized by the formula (CO)5M=C(X)R (M=Cr, Mo, W X=7r-donor substitutent, R=alkyl, aryl or unsaturated alkenyl and alkynyl), have been known now for about 40 years. They have been widely used in synthetic reactions [37,51-58] and show a very good reactivity especially in cycloaddition reactions [59-64]. As described above, Fischer-type carbene complexes are characterized by a formal metal-carbon double bond to a low-valent transition metal which is usually stabilized by 7r-acceptor substituents such as CO, PPh3 or Cp. The electronic structure of the metal-carbene bond is of great interest because it determines the reactivity of the complex [65-68]. Several theoretical studies have addressed this problem by means of semiempirical [69-73], Hartree-Fock (HF) [74-79] and post-HF [80-83] calculations and lately also by density functional theory (DFT) calculations [67, 84-94]. Often these studies also compared Fischer-type and... 

If we except the Density Functional Theory and Coupled Clusters treatments (see, for example, reference [1] and references therein), the Configuration Interaction (Cl) and the Many-Body-Perturbation-Theory (MBPT) [2] approaches are the most widely-used methods to deal with the correlation problem in computational chemistry. The MBPT approach based on an HF-SCF (Hartree-Fock Self-Consistent Field) single reference taking RHF (Restricted Hartree-Fock) [3] or UHF (Unrestricted Hartree-Fock ) orbitals [4-6] has been particularly developed, at various order of perturbation n, leading to the widespread MPw or UMPw treatments when a Moller-Plesset (MP) partition of the electronic Hamiltonian is considered [7]. The implementation of such methods in various codes and the large distribution of some of them as black boxes make the MPn theories a common way for the non-specialist to tentatively include, with more or less relevancy, correlation effects in the calculations. 

It is also of interest to study the "inverse" problem. If something is known about the symmetry properties of the density or the (first order) density matrix, what can be said about the symmetry properties of the corresponding wave functions In a one electron problem the effective Hamiltonian is constructed either from the density [in density functional theories] or from the full first order density matrix [in Hartree-Fock type theories]. If the density or density matrix is invariant under all the operations of a space CToup, the effective one electron Hamiltonian commutes with all those elements. Consequently the eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian transform under these operations according to the irreducible representations of the space group. We have a scheme which is selfconsistent with respect to symmetty. 

The determination of the electronic structure of lanthanide-doped materials and the prediction of the optical properties are not trivial tasks. The standard ligand field models lack predictive power and undergoes parametric uncertainty at low symmetry, while customary computation methods, such as DFT, cannot be used in a routine manner for ligand field on lanthanide accounts. The ligand field density functional theory (LFDFT) algorithm23-30 consists of a customized conduct of nonempirical DFT calculations, extracting reliable parameters that can be used in further numeric experiments, relevant for the prediction in luminescent materials science.31 These series of parameters, which have to be determined in order to analyze the problem of two-open-shell 4f and 5d electrons in lanthanide materials, are as follows. 

The attractive potential exerted on the electrons due to the nuclei - the expectation value of the second operator VNe in equation (1-4) - is also often termed the external potential, Vext, in density functional theory, even though the external potential is not necessarily limited to the nuclear field but may include external magnetic or electric fields etc. From now on we will only consider the electronic problem of equations (1 -4) - (1 -6) and the subscript elec will be dropped. 

Encl[p] is the non-classical contribution to the electron-electron interaction containing all the effects of self-interaction correction, exchange and Coulomb correlation described previously. It will come as no surprise that finding explicit expressions for the yet unknown functionals, i. e. T[p] and Encl[p], represents the major challenge in density functional theory and a large fraction of this book will be devoted to that problem. 

Are there any remedies in sight within approximate Kohn-Sham density functional theory to get correct energies connected with physically reasonable densities, i. e., without having to use wrong, that is symmetry broken, densities In many cases the answer is indeed yes. But before we consider the answer further, we should point out that the question only needs to be asked in the context of the approximate functionals for degenerate states and related problems outlined above, an exact density functional in principle also exists. The real-life solution is to employ the non-interacting ensemble-Vs representable densities p intro-... 

The densities Pi are obtained from a set of degenerate KS wave functions and the w, are the corresponding weights. Without going into details we note that regular density functional theory can be extended to such ensembles. For our problems at hand, we can write down the energy expression as...
