Spherical vaterite crystals were obtained with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid protected gold nanoparticles as the nucleation template by the carbonate diffusion method [51]. The crystallization of calcium carbonate in the absence of the 4-MBA capped gold nanoparticles resulted in calcite crystals. This indicates that the polymorphs of CaCOj were controlled by the acid-terminated gold nanoparticles. This result indicates that the rigid carboxylic acid structures can play a role in initiating the nucleation of vaterite as in the case of the G4.5 PAMAM dendrimer described above. [Pg.156]

The possibility of using electrostatic charge attraction has been exploited in the preparation of gold dendrimer encapsulated nanoparticles (DENs), which under appropriate conditions can be fully distributed along the surface of monodispersed MWCNTs (Fig. 3.21) [103]. [Pg.64]

The stepwise construction of self-assembled organic/inorganic multilayers based on multivalent supramolecular interactions between guest-functionalized dendrimers and nanoparticles and host-modified gold nanoparticles has been developed, yielding supramolecular LbL assembly (Fig. 13.8).12 Multilayer thin films composed of... [Pg.416]

An interesting example of the latter was accomplished by Reinhoudt and coworkers, who employed cyclodextrin (CD) functionalized self-assembled mono-layers (SAMs) to build up layer-by-layer (LBL) thin films via alternating host-guest interactions with functionalized dendrimers and gold nanoparticles [118,... [Pg.287]

The LBL self-assembly onto the CD functionalized surface requires at least two complementary substrates in order that multiple layers can be built up upon repeated alternating applications of the substrates, until a desired thickness has been achieved. Reinhoudt and coworkers chose the self-assembled interaction between CD-modified gold nanoparticles and either adamantyl- or ferrocene-functionalized dendrimers, which in turn were composed either of poly(propyleni-mine) (PPI) or poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) [118, 122]. [Pg.287]
