The importance of trace elements is manifold and. unfortunately, previously hampered by relatively insensitive analytical methods. Good methods for determining concentrations of I ppm or less have been available for relatively few dements yet these may be the optimum concentrations for a particular trace element. When the responses of living organisms are more sensitive than the laboratory black boxes," the chemist naturally develops an inferiority complex. Fortunately, the recent development of analytical techniques capable of determining parts per billion has opened new vistas for the study of these problems. Some of these techniques are atomic absorption, atomic fluorescence, activation analysis, and X-ray fluorescence.

These results coincide with those of a recent review of evidence (593) and a recent meta-analysis (594), although early pivotal comparisons of risperidone, haloperidol, and placebo in agitated and demented patients did not find substantial differences when the evaluation was performed at 12 months (SEDA-25, 68).

The most serious defect in the system, especially in its usefulness in the laboratory, is that similar elements are sometimes in remote positions, while dissimilar elements are brought close together. These difficulties are most pronounced in qualitative analysis, in which the solubilities of salts are of prime importance. As illustrations of this defect it may be observed that copper and mercury, silver and thallium, barium and lead, have many similar properties which are not suggested by their positions ixi the table. On the other hand we might expect gold and caesium, rubidium aud silver, and manganese and chlorine to resemble each other much more closely than they do. It is obvious, however, that no table could possibly show all the resemblances and contrasts of each dement, and a, detailed study of each of these elements justifies in a measure its usual position in the table.
