Even if all of the elements described so far have been present within a sedimentary basin an accumulation will not necessarily be encountered. One of the crucial questions in prospect evaluation is about the timing of events. The deformation of strata into a suitable trap has to precede the maturation and migration of petroleum. The reservoir seal must have been intact throughout geologic time. If a leak occurred sometime in the past, the exploration well will only encounter small amounts of residual hydrocarbons. Conversely, a seal such as a fault may have developed early on in the field s history and prevented the migration of hydrocarbons into the structure. [Pg.14]

Steel forged fittings with screwed ends may be installed without pipe dope in the threads and seal-welded (Fig. 10-130) to secure bubble-tight joints with a minimum of welders labor. They are not subject to deformation by pipe wrenches, and such couplings, bushings, and plugs are often used with the screwed fittings below. [Pg.964]

The sample eapsule is plaeed in a tight-fitting 4340 steel fixture that serves to support the eopper eapsule. Pressure from the detonation of the explosive is transmitted to the eopper eapsule through a mild steel driver plate. This plate is also lapped optically flat on both surfaces. The mild steel acts to shape the pressure pulse due to the 13 GPa structural phase transition. With proper choice of the diameter of the driver plate and beveled interior opening of the steel fixture, shock deformation of the driver plate acts to seal the capsule within the fixture. [Pg.152]

A 4.9 g sample of the liquid siloxane in a glass dish was put into a bomb calorimeter (on an open bench) containing 5 ml of sodium hydroxide solution to absorb combustion gases. The electric igniter system consisted of a metal wire in contact with a cotton-wool wick which dipped into the siloxane sample. The bomb was sealed, pressured up to 39-44 bar with oxygen, and the igniter was fired. A violent explosion blew the lid off the bomb (rated at 190 bar working, 250 bar test), and examination of the deformed bomb indicated that a maximum detonation pressure of around 900 bar had been attained. [Pg.1852]

Similar to its predecessors of the Emrys series, the operation limits for the Initiator system are 60-250 °C at a maximum pressure of 20 bar. Temperature control is achieved in the same way by means of an IR sensor perpendicular to the sample position. Thus, the temperature is measured on the outer surface of the reaction vessels, and no internal temperature measurement is available. Pressure measurement is accomplished by a non-invasive sensor integrated into the cavity lid, which measures the deformation of the Teflon seal of the vessels. Efficient cooling is accomplished by means of a pressurized air supply at a rate of approximately 60 L min-1, which enables cooling from 250 °C to 40 °C within one minute. [Pg.50]

Reactions were performed in sealed thick-walled glass tubes or in Teflon acid-digestion vessels, in domestic microwave ovens [13]. Teflon vessels can be used at pressures up to 14 atm, at temperatures below 250 °C, and are resistant to most commonly used chemicals, although they deform at temperatures >250 °C. [Pg.296]
