Definitions and Example

The purpose of this Chapter is not to present an exhaustive theory of linear algebra that would take more than a volume by itself to be presented adequately. It is rather to introduce some fundamental aspects of vectors, matrices and orthogonal functions together with the most common difficulties that the reader most probably has encountered in scientific readings, and to provide some simple definitions and examples with geochemical connotations. Many excellent textbooks exist which can complement this introductory chapter, in particular that of Strang (1976).

From the definitions and examples above, it should be clear that metrological traceability is established by a series of comparisons back to a reference value of a quantity. In the mass example it is easy to picture a number of scientists with ever more sophisticated balances comparing one mass with another down the chain of masses from the international prototype of the kilogram to bathroom scales. This is known as a calibration hierarchy. A mass farther up the chain is used to calibrate the next mass down the chain, which in turn can be used to calibrate another mass, and so on, until the final measurement of the mass is made.

This review has been written in order to clarify fundamental aspects of photocatalysis, an important subject in inorganic and material chemistry, not to present a list of studies on photocatalysis reported so far, since it seems rather difficult to make a complete review by introducing all or a large part of the reported studies on photocatalysis of relatively long history. This review is based on the author s experience in studies on photocatalysis and topics are limited to so-called semiconductor photocatalysis definition and examples of photocatalysis, its principle and kinetics, visible light-induced photocatalysis, and design of active photocatalysts are discussed in detail. 

As we ve seen, in one-dimensional phase spaces the flow is extremely confined— all trajectories are forced to move monotonically or remain constant. In higherdimensional phase spaces, trajectories have much more room to maneuver, and so a wider range of dynamical behavior becomes possible. Rather than attack all this complexity at once, we begin with the simplest class of higher-dimensional systems, namely linear systems in two dimensions. These systems are interesting in their own right, and, as we ll see later, they also play an important role in the classification of fixed points of nonlinear systems.
