Defect structure three ring

In Fig. 10, we compaxe the structure of the three-ring defect obtained from simulation and theory for s = 0.3ii with R = Soq. In both cases, the director field is shown superimposed to a contour plot of 5, the scalar order parameter. Both theory and simulation exhibit the third ring in addition to the usual two Saturn rings. In these plots we can observe how the strength of S decreases continuously from its bulk value to a minimum at the defects. Once more, in contrast to the field theory results, the Monte Carlo data show layers of low and high values of S close to the spheres surfaces that are correlated with modulations in density see Fig. 10). [Pg.237]

Nicotiana species and certain lupine species also contain potent toxic and teratogenic piperidine alkaloids (Figure 2.4). All teratogenic piperidine alkaloids have specific structural characteristics that are responsible for induction of birth defects. Their molecular structures include a piperidine ring, with a side chain of at least three carbons or larger attached adjacent to... [Pg.25]

In CBED, zone-axis patterns (ZAP) can be recorded near the relevant zone axis and the pattern may also include a higher-order Laue zone (referred to as a HOLZ). The radius of the first HOLZ ring G is related to the periodicity along the zone axis [c] and the electron wavelength, by = 2/kc. CBED can thus provide reciprocal space data in all three (x,y,z) dimensions, typically with a lateral resolution of a few nanometres. As in any application, corroborative evidence from other methods such as HRTEM and single-crystal x-ray diffraction, where possible, can be productive in an unambiguous structural determination of complex and defective materials such as catalysts. We illustrate some examples in later sections. [Pg.61]

Chemical stabilization involves removing the concentration of surface hydroxyls and surface defects, such as metastable three-membered rings, below a critical level so that the surface is not stressed by rehydroxylation in use. Thermal stabilization involves reducing the surface area sufficiently to enable the material to be used at a given temperature without reversible structural changes. The mechanisms of thermal and chemical stabilization are interrelated because of the extreme effects that surface hydroxyls and chemisorbed water have on structural changes. Full densification of gels, such as the... [Pg.255]

The conversion of serine to glycine involves the transfer of a one-carbon unit from serine to an acceptor. This reaction is catalyzed by senne hydroxymethylase, with pyridoxal phosphate as a coenzyme. The acceptor in this reaction is tetra-hydrofolate, a derivative of folic acid and a frequently encountered carrier of one-carbon units in metabolic pathways. Its structure has three parts a substituted pteridine ring, /(-aminobenzoic acid, and glutamic acid (Figure 23.11). Folic acid is a vitamin that has been identified as essential in preventing birth defects consequently, it is now a recommended supplement for all women of... [Pg.680]
