The most common way of representing volume in chemistry is by using liters (L). You can treat the liter like you would any other metric base unit by adding prefixes to it, such as milli- or deci-. 

While hecto, deka, deci, and centi are SI prefixes, their use should generally be avoided except for the SI unit-multiples for area and volume and nontechnical use of centimeter, as for body and clothing measurement. The prefix hecto should be avoided also because the longhand symbol h may be...

Recall from Chapter 2 that the universal unit system used hy scientists is called Le Systeme Internationale d Unit6s or SI. It is a metric system based on seven base units—meter, second, kilogram, kelvin, mole, ampere, and candela—from which all other units are derived. The size of a unit in a metric system is indicated by a prefix related to the difference between that unit and the base unit. For example, the base unit for length in the metric system is the meter. One tenth of a meter is a decimeter where the prefix deci- means one tenth. And, one thousand meters is a kilometer. The prefix kilo- means one thousand. 

Decimal Multiples and Submultiples of SI Units In practical application of SI units, certain values are too large or too small to be expressed conveniently in the base or derived units. Numerical values can be brought to convenient size when the unit is appropriately modified by official SI prefixes. In general the prefixes are such that the value of the unit changes 1000-fold. However, certain common previously accepted multiples or sub multiples, such as deci- and hecto-, are still accepted in the SI framework. The SI prefixes are listed in Table 1-5 together with their symbols.

The only real use that we will make of the prefix deci- is with volume measurements, where a cubic decimeter is a useful sized volume. We rarely use the prefix centi- except with meters. 

Place the following metric prefixes in order from the smallest value to the largest value deci, kilo, centi, micro, mega, milli, giga, nano. 

Nearly all of the SI prefixes are multiples or sub-multiples of 1000. However, these are inconvenient for many purposes and so hecto, deca, deci, and centi are also used.

Common prefixes for metric units—which may apply in more cases than shown below—include giga- (1 billion times the unit), mega- (one million times), kih- (1,000 times), hecto- (100 times), deka- (10 times), deci- (0.1 times, or one tenth), centi-(0.01, or one hundredth), milli- (0.001, or one thousandth), and micro- (0.0001, or one millionth). 

One advantage of any metric system is that it is a decimal system. In SI, a larger or smaller unit for a physical quantity is indicated by an SI prefix, which is a prefix used in the International System to indicate a power of ten. For example, the base unit of length in SI is the meter (somewhat longer than a yard), and 10 meter is called a centi-meter. Thus 2.54 centimeters equals 2.54 X 10 meters. The SI prefixes are fisted in Table 1.3. Only the highlighted ones will be used in this book mega- (10 ), kilo- (10 ), deci- (10 ), centi- (10 ), milli- (10 ), micro- (10 ), nano- (10 ), andpico- (10 ). 

The prefix centi is like cents in a dollar. One cent wonld be a centidollar, or 0.01 of a dollar. That also means that one dollar is the same as 100 cents. The prefix deci is like the value of a dime to a dollar. One dime would be a decidollar, or 0.1 of a dollar. That also means that one dollar has the same value as 10 dimes.
