All absolute dating methods that have proven dependable are based on radioactive decay. Virtually all of the methods depend on the methodical decrease in the amount of the radioactive nuclide and the growth of the corresponding daughter product. The one exception is in the area of radiation-induced damage in solids, which is the basis of thermoluminescence or ESR dating. This latter scheme will be dealt with later in the chapter. Here the basic principles of canonical radioactive geochronometry as applied to marine deposits is reviewed.

Archaeological evidence and bibliographic sources suggested that the church existed in the 12 century, and underwent some major changes during the 12 and 13 centuries. Nevertheless, the lack of detailed documentation about the different construction phases suggested that a more direct and absolute dating method would be desirable. 

Considering all the above factors for amino acid racemisation rates, this technique cannot be used as an absolute dating technique. To overcome the problem of uncertainty, the amino acid racemisation method must be calibrated against other more reliable techniques. 

Because the half-lives of these two isotopes vary by more than a factor of two, the method is sensitive. Since the ratio 26A1/ 10Be decreases by a factor of two every 1.3 million years, it is thought that the method should provide absolute dates up to several million years. 

At the present stage of development, dating with 32Si is best applied to the establishment of relative ages of water in a single aquifer. The method is probably not a reliable means of establishing an absolute age.
