Data Treatment Strategy

Subtraction of the analytical background. The average signal of the baseline of the chromatogram, measured before the elution of the peak, is subtracted from the signal of the peak of the species [13, 15]. 

No background subtraction. When using the linear regression slope method of data treatment, it is not necessary to subtract any background since the background intensities are taken into account when calculating the slope.

The data on Herceptin—alone or in combination with current chemotherapies for metastatic breast cancer—clearly demonstrate that the degree of HER2 overexpression is related to treatment response. Inhibition of this tumor-transforming growth factor has proved to produce clinical effects but only in those patients with overexpressed phenotypes (2 and 30-These results formed the basis for the requirement to determine levels of HER2 on tumor tissues before deciding whether Herceptin is the best treatment strategy for an individual patient. 

The development of treatment strategies based on the best scientific data available and tempered by our combined clinical experience. 

Anticonvulsants. The plasma levels of anticonvulsants that are optimally therapeutic for psychiatric disorders have not been clearly established. Because there are data on their usefulness to treat seizure disorders, monitoring of blood levels has increased the safety of anticonvulsants (and indirectly their efficacy), while also verifying compliance and determining the cause of toxicity when more than one medication is concurrently administered (see the section Alternative Treatment Strategies in Chapter 10). 

Relying on the activity of the indigenous microfiora, Tremaine et al. (1994) comparatively evaluated three solid-phase treatment strategies according to their ability to remove PAHs from creosote-contaminated soil. These efforts culminated in an initial biodegradation rate 06) of 122 mg total PAH per kg of soil per day with a starting soil total PAH concentration of 500-14 000 mg/kg. However, when biodegradation data are considered over the entire 12-week incubation period, PAH removal appears to be less extensive removal of the HMW PAHs was not described. 

Randomized trial data suggest that unprotected carotid angioplasty can be performed with results comparable to those of CEA (5,6), and some authors have suggested that filter-type EPDs use might be associated with an increased propensity to embolism (38), Nevertheless, we believe that utilization of embolic protection should be considered the standard of care in carotid stenting. When use of an EPD is precluded by anatomical factors, alternative treatment strategies (CEA, medical therapy) must be strongly considered.
