Recently, series of computerized defectoscopes AUGUR for inspected area image reconstruction have been developed in Russia in the framework of RF Minatom program. One of them is device with coherent data processing for expert inspection named AUGUR 4.2 .

A calibration curve is prepared, using absorbance versus concentration plot, so that the concentration of the unknown component can be determined. But quantitative analysis for a complex system like vulcanised rubber or a blend of two or three components, is not possible. The use of computers with the FTIR spectrometer, increases the rapid scanning capability, data processing for analysis of chemical or physical structural changes in polymers as a function of time over the entire mid-IR frequency.

Although standard IR spectrometers are used for studying the amide bands, FTIR spectrometers are more accurate and reliable. FT-IR spectrophotometers are based upon the Michelson interferometer. A typical instrument (Fig. 7.1) comprises an optical bench housing the interferometer, sample, infrared source and detector, coupled to a computer, which controls the spectral scanning, analysis and data processing (for review see Griffiths, 1980). 

Data processing for each of the data acquisition programs prints out the data for each compound with its characteristic ions (Table IV). The computer integrates each peak by the peak height and peak area. The actual concentration is calculated from standards run with the samples. 

The commercial softwares, initially developed by instrament manufacturers for open-access operation, were adapted to enable unattended data acquisition and automated data processing for large series of samples from an autosampler supporting the 96-well microtitre plate format, which is the sample format of choice in combinatorial synthesis. Initially, mainly Gilson 215 or 233 XL autosamplers were used, but other systems have become available from other instrument manufacturers. The complete system is under control of the MS data system. It consists of a 96-well-plate autosampler, an LC pumping system, eventually a UV-photodiode-array detector (DAD) in series and/or evaporative hght scattering (ELSD) detector in parallel, and the mass spectrometer eqnipped with ESI, APCI, and/or atmospheric-pressure photoionization (APPI).

The computerized system which helps most in product development resembles more the so-called expert system, which is a set of relationships quantified by an experiment for the purpose of similar products. Such systems are increasingly more effective with the amount of data (information) increasing. Considering such need, this book will have in the future a companion CD-ROM containing a base of available data which will be periodically updated to build an incremental wealth of information serving two purposes material selection and data processing for the needs of the formulator.
