Damping properties

Gray iron has outstanding damping properties—that is, ability to absorb vibration—as well as wear resistance. However, gray iron is brittle, with poor resistance to impact and shock. Machinability is excellent.

The interesting fact is that the two men just mentioned were initially working independently of each other. The initial analysis used infinitely stiff bearings and, while the method improved the results, it did not match the compressor critical speed test results consistently. Later work recognized the existence of a bearing oil film with elastic and damping properties.

PP/IIR-V is marketed to compete with conventional butyl rubber thanks to its low gas permeability, compliance with the pharmacopoeia and, secondarily, its damping properties. 

PP/IIR-V is appreciated for its low gas permeability combined with compliance with the pharmacopoeia, fair compression sets, the rubber-like hardness range, low density, low-temperature behaviour, fair ageing resistance, sterilization resistance, damping properties, ease of waste recycling... 

PP/IIR-V targets specific applications relating to low gas permeability, pharmacopoeia compliance, and/or damping properties. Consumption is inferior to that of PP/EPDM-V. 

Low-frequency acquisition of the curves corresponds to a non-inertial regime wherein the mass of the cantilever does not play any role and the system can be treated as two springs in series.
