Cylindrical assemblies

There has been a number of examples of cylindrical (tubular) supramolecular structures reported over recent years. These encompass all-carbon structures as well as other inorganic and organic tubes (and columns) and include lipid-based systems. However, the majority of these tubes represent extended arrays (on a multi-nanometre or higher scale) and hence fall outside the scope of the present discussion - in any case, many were not obtained directly by self-assembly processes. Indeed, only a limited number of self-assembled, discrete cylindrical systems have been described.

Crimped Metal Ribbon A flame arrester element that is manufactured of alternate layers of thin corrugated metal rihhon and a flat metal rihhon that are wound together on a mandrel to form a cylindrical assembly of many layers to produce a range of different sized triangular cells. The height and width of the triangular cells can he varied to provide the required quenching diameter. 

Above this, in the centre of the bowl, the four heads form a cylindrical assembly surrounding the channel (Figure lc), which is restricted at one point to 10 A (Figure2 see also Section 3.4.7). This constriction most probably corresponds to the cation binding site (selectivity filter) of the a-LTX channel (Section 3.4.1).

The hexagonal liquid crystal is a high-viscosity fluid phase composed of a close-packed array of cylindrical assemblies of theoretically unlimited size in the axial direction. The structures may be normal (in water) in that the hydrophilic head groups are located on the outer surface of the cylinder, or inverted, with the hydrophilic group located internally. 

This chapter presents the simulation of a button cell data reported by Liu et al. [38]. The model parameters derived here are further used in the performance analysis presented in the later chapters. A schematic representation of button cell is given in Fig. 6.1. The configuration is basically a concentric cylindrical assembly intercepted by the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). The fuel and air inlet are through the inner cylindrical pipe, which reaches above the anode and cathode. The product gas outlet is through the concentric space between the inner and outer cylinder.
