One advantage of sintering is the close control of si2e and shape of the abrasive particle. Fig. 2 shows one application of ATR depth profiling. In this case, ATR spectra were obtained as a function of angle of incidence from a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) film of thickness 0.5 p.m that was deposited onto a germanium hemi-cylinder [4]. The solid line represents the ATR spectrum of PMMA while the squares represent the film thickness that was recovered from the infrared spectra using four different bands. Depolymerization under Pressure.62 PET resin was depolymerized at pressures which varied from 101 to 620 kPa and temperatures of 190—240° C in a stirred laboratory reactor having a bomb cylinder of2000 mL (Parr Instrument) for reaction times of 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 h and at various ratios of EG to PET. The rate of depolymerization was found to be directly proportional to the pressure, temperature, and EG—PET ratio. The depolymerization rate was proportional to the square of the EG concentration at constant temperature, which indicates that EG acts as both a catalyst and reactant in the chain scission process. [Pg.558]

As a vessel of a given shape increases in size, both the surface area and the volume increase, but they do not increase at the same rate. For a sphere the surface area is a function of the diameter squared and the volume is a function of the diameter cubed. This is also true for a cylinder whose height is a multiple of its diameter. The polymerization of styrene is an exothermic reaction. The amount of energy released at any time is dependent on the volume of the reactor, and the rate of removal of that heat is dependent on the surface area. Unless the heat is removed, the temperature will rise and the reaction rate will increase. The result will be an uncontrolled reaction that not only may ruin the batch but could also damage the reactor and might cause a tire or explosion to occur. [Pg.121]
