Cyclopentadiene 4 + 3 cycloaddition reactions

Few isothiazoles undergo simple cycloaddition reactions. 4-Nitroisothiazoles add to alkynes (see Section 4.17.7.4). With 5-thiones (84) and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, addition to both sulfur atoms leads to 1,3-dithioles (85) (77SST(4)339, 80H(14)785, 81H(16)156, 81H(16)595). Isothiazol-3-one 1-oxide and the corresponding 1,1-dioxide give normal adducts with cyclopentadiene and anthracene (80MI41700), and saccharin forms simple 1 1 or 1 2 adducts with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (72IJC(B)881). [Pg.152]

A similar transformation results when trimethylsilyloxy-substituted allylic halides react with silver perchlorate in nitromethane. The resulting allylic cation gives cycloaddition reactions with dienes such as cyclopentadiene. The isolated products result from desilyla-tion of the initial adducts ... [Pg.645]

In contrast to those unreactive dienes that can t achieve an s-cis conformation, other dienes are fixed only in the correct s-cis geometry and are therefore highly reactive in the Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction. 1,3-Cyclopentadiene, for example, is so reactive that it reacts with itself. At room temperature, 1,3-cycIopentadiene dimerizes. One molecule acts as diene and a second molecule acts as dienophile in a self Diels-Alder reaction. [Pg.497]

Cyclopentadiene is very reactive in Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions, but 1,3-cyclohexadiene is less reactive and 1,3-cycloheptadiene is nearly inert. Explain. (Molecular models are helpful.)... [Pg.512]

Bicyclic ketone 13 is a pivotal intermediate in Corey s approach to the prostaglandins. Buried within 13 is the five-membered ring of PGF2a, albeit in an undeveloped form. It would appear that a particularly direct approach to the synthesis of 13 would involve a [4+2] cycloaddition reaction between substituted cyclopentadiene 15 and ketene. Unfortunately, however, ketene itself is not a suit-... [Pg.70]

A key transformation in Corey s prostaglandin synthesis is a Diels-Alder reaction between a 5-(alkoxymethyl)-l,3-cyclopenta-diene and a ketene equivalent such as 2-chloroacrylonitrile (16). As we have already witnessed in Scheme 3, it is possible to bring about a smooth [4+2] cycloaddition reaction between 5-substituted cyclopentadiene 15 and 2-chloroacrylonitrile (16) to give racemic 14 as a mixture of epimeric chloronitriles. Under these conditions, the diastereomeric chloronitriles are both produced in racemic form because one enantiotopic face of dienophile 16 will participate in a Diels-Alder reaction with the same facility as the other enantiotopic face. In subsequent work, Corey s group demonstrated that racemic hydroxy acid 11, derived in three steps from racemic 14 (see Scheme 3), could be resolved in a classical fashion with (+)-ephe-... [Pg.75]

Ahern and Gokel (1979) briefly mention that (jE -arenediazocyanides also react with a variety of dienes (cyclopentadiene, cyclohexadiene, butadiene, ( )-piperylene, etc.) in a [4+ 2]-cycloaddition reaction with formation of tetrahydropyridazines (Scheme 6-31). Here the two azo nitrogen atoms of the diazocyanide react as a dieneophile in a bis-aza Diels-Alder reaction. [Pg.129]

Crystallization to obtain the major diastereomer in pure form is possible in some cases. These hydrogen-bonded vinylic sulfoxides undergo asymmetric 2 + 4-cycloaddition reactions with 1,3-cyclopentadiene (see p. 845). [Pg.828]

Staudinger observed that the cycloaddition of ketenes with 1,3-dienes afforded cyclobutanones from a formal [2+2] cycloaddition [52] prior to the discovery of the Diels-Alder reaction. The 2+2 cycloadditions were classified into the symmetry-allowed 2+2 cycloaddition reactions [6, 7], It was quite momentous when Machiguchi and Yamabe reported that [4+2] cycloadducts are initial products in the reactions of diphenylketene with cyclic dienes such as cyclopentadiene (Scheme 11) [53, 54], The cyclobutanones arise by a [3, 3]-sigmatropic (Claisen) rearrangement of the initial products. [Pg.36]

Secondary orbital interactions (SOI) (Fig. 2) [5] between the non-reacting centers have been proposed to determine selectivities. For example, cyclopentadiene undergoes a cycloaddition reaction with acrolein 1 at 25 °C to give a norbomene derivative (Fig. 2a) [6]. The endo adduct (74.4%) was preferred over the exo adduct (25.6%). This endo selectivity has been interpreted in terms of the in-phase relation between the HOMO of the diene at the 2-position and the LUMO at the carbonyl carbon in the case of the endo approach (Fig. 2c). An unfavorable SOI (Fig. 2d) has also been reported for the cycloaddition of cyclopentadiene and acetylenic aldehyde 2 and its derivatives (Fig. 2b) [7-9]. The exo-TS has been proposed to be favored over the endo- IS. [Pg.131]

Facial selectivities of cycloaddition reactions of 5,5-disnbstitnted cyclopentadienes have been stndied by Inagaki and Ishida [32, 44, 45] and other groups [40],... [Pg.167]

The study of the cycloaddition behavior of l,l-dichloro-2-neopentylsilene, C Si =CHCH2Bu (2) [3], reveals the high polarity of the Si=C bond and a strong electrophilicity. The [4+2] cycloaddition reactions with anthracene (3), cyclopentadiene (4) and fulvenes (5) proceed as expected surprising, however, the Diels-Alder reactions with dienes are of lower activity, like naphthalene (6) and furans (7). [Pg.105]

The substitution of the exo-methylene hydrogen atoms of MCP with halogens seems to favor the [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction by stabilizing the intermediate diradical. Indeed, chloromethylenecyclopropane (96) reacts with acrylonitrile (519) to give a diastereomeric mixture of spirohexanes in good yield (Table 41, entry 2) [27], but was unreactive towards styrene and ds-stilbene. Anyway, it reacted with dienes (2,3-dimethylbutadiene, cyclopentadiene, cyc-lohexadiene, furan) exclusively in a [4 + 2] fashion (see Sect. 2.1.1) [27], while its... [Pg.81]

Microwave heating has also been employed for performing retro-Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions, as exemplified in Scheme 6.94. In the context of preparing optically pure cross-conjugated cydopentadienones as precursors to arachidonic acid derivatives, Evans, Eddolls, and coworkers performed microwave-mediated Lewis acid-catalyzed retro-Diels-Alder reactions of suitable exo-cyclic enone building blocks [193, 194], The microwave-mediated transformations were performed in dichloromethane at 60-100 °C with 0.5 equivalents of methylaluminum dichloride as catalyst and 5 equivalents of maleic anhydride as cyclopentadiene trap. In most cases, the reaction was stopped after 30 min since continued irradiation eroded the product yields. The use of short bursts of microwave irradiation minimized doublebond isomerization. [Pg.172]

A rapid access to carbocyclic nucleosides, containing a fused isoxazoline ring has been proposed, starting from cyclopentadiene. The route involves a het-ero Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction of nitrosocarbonylbenzene followed by a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of nitrile oxides, cleavage of the N-0 tether and transformation of the heterocyclic aminols into nucleosides via construction of purine and pyrimidine heterocycles (457). [Pg.90]

The phosphino-oxazoline copper(II) complex (55) has also been found to be an effective catalyst[136] as have some titanium complexes, such as the extensively researched titanium-TADDOL system (56)[137]. A modified Ti(IV)-TADDOL compound is the catalyst of choice to promote Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions between cyclopentadiene and alk-2-enyl phenylsulfonylmethyl ketones[138]. [Pg.35]

Optically pure 1,3-allenedicarboxylate 110c possessing central and axial chirality was prepared from dimethyl acetonedicarboxylate by incorporation of menthol as a chiral auxiliary [98]. The [4+2]-cycloaddition reaction of 110c with cyclopentadiene in the presence of A1C13 proceeded with high diastereoselectivity to afford adduct 115. [Pg.763]

The cycloaddition of allenes carrying an electron-withdrawing phosphorus substituent has also been studied [118]. Allenyl phosphine oxide 138 is prepared in a manner analogous to allenyl sulfoxide. The [4+ 2]-cycloaddition reaction of 138 with cyclopentadiene proceeded with a high endo selectivity. [Pg.772]

The cycloaddition reaction of crotonaldehyde (362) with cyclopentadiene in the presence of 20 mol% of catalyst 361b afforded cycloadduct 363 with 58% yield (endo/exo = 97/3) and 72% ee (equation 104)230. [Pg.413]

Several chiral lanthanide(III) Lewis acid catalysts, derived from chiral binaphthols, have been used in the cycloaddition reactions of cyclopentadiene with substituted iV-acryloyl-1,3-oxazolidin-2-ones. A catalyst derived from ytterbium triflate, (R)-binaphthol... [Pg.434]

Niggli and Neuenschwander294 studied the reaction of fulvene (461) with cyclopen-tadiene. The main product fraction consisted of three 1 1 adducts, as illustrated in equation 138. Diels-Alder Adducts 462 and 463 resulted from attack of cyclopentadiene at the endocyclic and exocyclic double bonds of fulvene, respectively. The formation of 464 was rationalized by a [6 + 4] cycloaddition reaction followed by two [1,5] hydrogen shifts. It was stated that due to the absence of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups on both triene and diene, fulvene may have reacted via its HOMO as well as its LUMO. [Pg.438]

An extensive review of 4 - - 3-cycloaddition reactions has been presented. The 1,3-difluorooxyallyl intermediate obtained from l-bromo-l,3-difluoropropan-2-one undergoes 4 + 3-cycloaddition with cyclopentadiene and ftiran to give difluorobicyclo[3.2.1]octenones. The use of 4 + 3-cycloaddition reactions of cyclic oxyallyls in the synthesis of natural products has been extensively studied. The intramolecular 4 + 3-cycloaddition of allylic sulfones (111) possessing a diene in the side-chain in the presence of Lewis acids yield cycloadducts (112) in good to excellent yields (Scheme 43). ... [Pg.478]
