Mannich reaction of 2-cyloalkyl(heteroaryl)-6-aryl-imidazo[2,l-A][l,3,4]thiadiazoles 161 with formaldehyde in the presence of cyclic bases (piperidine and pyrrolidine), in methanol with a catalytic amount of acetic acid, gives the corresponding C-alkylated derivatives 172 (Equation 8) <2006BMC3069>. 

A second method is due to J. von Braun and consists in the addition of cyanogen bromide to tertiary cyclic bases.1 In the unstable addition product a C—N-linkage is broken and at the same time the bromine wanders to a new position. A brominated derivative of cyanamide is produced and this, on hydrolysis, yields a secondary amine which can be broken down further, e.g.

The stability of the nitrogen-containing ring of codeine, compared with that of other cyclic bases, has been investigated by von Braun in an ingenious way [89]. 

During investigations of the reaction between cyanogen bromide and cyclic bases von Braun [17] discovered that thebaine reacts with this compound to give a substance subsequently identified as cyanonorthe-benine [xv] [18]. This cannot be prepared from thebenine, nor can it be hydrolysed to northebonine. On catalytic reduction it absorbs eight... 

Brookes and coworkers [32] have studied the effect of replacement of the piperazine ring by other diacidic cyclic bases on antifilarial response. Consequently, a series of 2,4 -dipiperidyl, 4,4 -dipiperidyl and 4-aminopiperidines with a diethylcarbamoyl chain were prepared and evaluated for their antifilarial activity. The most effective compounds of this class were 23-26 possessing marked activity against the microfilariae of L. carinii, but none was better than DEC. 

A detailed study of the desulphurization of the disulphides (301)(R,R = dialkoxy, or alkyl(alkoxy) ) by phosphorus(III) compounds, including (Mc2N)2P, Ph P, or acyclic or cyclic (based on catechol) phosphotriesters or ester amides) considered the role of phosphonium and phosphorane intermediates. The isomerization of (302) into (303), and the decomposition (desulphurization, deoxygenation, or dealkylation) into end products, are influenced by electronic and steric factors. 

In the test series carried out with silicon nitride the contact force was k t constant at Fn > 10N. The fretting pad was made of silicon nitride, too.The diameter of the ball varied between 5 and 15 mm, which corresponds to maximum H ertzian stresses in the contact area of pm = 2,053 MPa and 987 MPa respectively. The testing frequency of the cyclic base load as well as of the oscillatory movement of the fretting pad was 40 Hz. The stroke amplitude of the fretting pad was chosen at Sa = 100 pm. In ahphatic secondary amines this band is too weak to be detected readily. In cyclic bases, for example, only the normal aromatic absorptions are found in this region unless salt formation occurs [58]. Similarly, Barr and Haszeldine [74] could not identify this band in dimethyl or diethylamine, although a band near 1500 cm" was traced in some fluorinated derivatives. Imines with the structure —C=NH are similar to other secondary amides in that any NH deformation absorption shown is extremely weak, but of course they also show an absorption in the same region corresponding to the terminal C=N linkage.

Betaines are cyclic bases found almost exclusively in plants, where they may be storage forms of nitrogen or detoxication products. 

Cyclic bases actually are secondary or tertiary amines. The Rj and Rj groups have joined to close a ring. Examples for this are in Table I. Several of the cyclic bases (pyridine, imidazole, etc.) have a double bond between a C and an N atom (aromatic systems).
