Curl. Robert

CURL, ROBERT F., JR. < 1933—). An American whn won the Nobel prize for chemistry along with Sir Harold W. Kroto and Richard E. Smalley in 1996. the 100" anniversary uf Alfred Nobel s death. The trio won for the discovery of the CNi compound called buckminsierfullerene. He graduated from Rice University and received a Ph.D. from the Universily of California. Berkeley in 1957. [Pg.464]

Curl, Robert F. Jr. (1933-), Richard E. Smalley (1943-2005), and Sir Harold W. Kroto (1939-) shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discovery of fullerenes. In 1999, bnckyballs were found to exist naturally in a meteor. [Pg.118]

Curl, Robert Floyd Jnr (1933- ) American chemist. Curl s initial work was on small clusters of atoms of semiconductors, such as germanium and silicon. In 1984, under the influence of Harry KROTO, he became interested in the possibility of producing long-chain carbon molecules, and persuaded his colleague Richard SMALLEY to deploy the resources of his laboratory towards this end. Although they expected on theoretical grounds to discover linear chain clusters with up to 33 carbon atoms, they in fact came across an unexpected molecule with 60 carbon atoms and with a cage-like structure. The... [Pg.64]

Curl, Robert Floyd (b. 1933) American chemist who, working with Harold Kroto and Richard Smalley, earned the 1996 Nobel Prize in chemistry for the synthesis of an entirely new molecule consisting only of carbon atoms, which was named a buckminsterfullerene (also known as the buckyball molecule) because of the similarity of its structure to the geodesic domes of the architect Buckminster Fuller. The buckyball is a spherical structure of bonded carbon atoms and has many valuable properties, including acting as an efficient lubricant. [Pg.144]

Curie, Pierre (1859-1906) French chemist who helped understand radioactivity and also discovered two new elements together with his wife Marie Ciuie. Curl, Robert, Jr. (1933-) American chemist who shared the 1996 Nobel prize in chemistry for his joint discovery of buckminsterfuUerene. [Pg.499]
