Curing agents definition

Conventional rubber compound analysis requires several instrumental techniques, in addition to considerable pretreatment of the sample to isolate classes of components, before these selected tests can be definitive. Table 2.5 lists some general analytical tools. Spectroscopic methods such as FTIR and NMR often encounter difficulties in the analysis of vulcanised rubbers since they are insoluble and usually contain many kinds of additives such as a curing agent, plasticisers, stabilisers and fillers. Pyrolysis is advantageous for the practical analysis of insoluble polymeric materials.

The production of polyurethane involves the controlled polymerization of an isocyanate, a long-chain-backbone polyol and a shorter-chain extender or cross-linker. The reaction rates can be controlled through the use of specific catalyst compounds, well known in the industry, to provide sufficient time to pour or otherwise transfer the mix and to cure the polymer sufficiently to allow handling of the freshly demolded part. The use of blowing agents allows the formation of a definite cellular core (thus the term microcellular elastomer ) as well as a non-porous skin, producing an integral sandwich-type cross section. 

It is emphasized in NCFs own definition of the word, that chemoprevention is not directed at curing cancer after the cancer has developed. Its purpose is strictly preventive, although the theories and therapies may be applicable even to developing cancers. Anticancer agents may also be useful in chemoprevention. 

Retroviruses are the subject of extensive research in virology these days for several reasons. The first is that retroviruses have been linked to cancer, and more aspects of the relationship between viruses and cancer are discovered every day. The second is that human immimodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus. HIV is the causative agent of the disease acquired immimodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The search for AIDS treatments and a definitive cure remains one of the primary goals of retroviral research. HIV will be covered more extensively in the Hot Topics Magazine.
