Allen, G. and J. C. Bevington (eds.), Comprehensive Polymer Science , Pergamon Press, Oxford, 1989. A series of volumes that show the relationship between methods of preparation, treatment, structure and properties. It is organized into seven volumes Volume 1, Polymer Characterization Volume 2, Polymer Properties Volumes 3 and 4, Chain Polymerization Volume 5, Step Polymerization Volume 6, Polymer Reactions Volume 7, Specialty Polymers and Polymer Processing. A cumulative subject index completes the final volume. [Pg.1409]

Propofol (2,6-diisopropylphenol) is an extremely popular intravenous anesthetic. Its rate of onset of action is similar to that of the intravenous barbiturates recovery is more rapid and patients are able to ambulate sooner after propofol. Furthermore, patients subjectively "feel better" in the immediate postoperative period after propofol as compared with other intravenous anesthetics. Postoperative nausea and vomiting is less common because propofol has antiemetic actions. Propofol is used for both induction and maintenance of anesthesia however, cumulative effects can delay arousal following prolonged infusion. These favorable properties are responsible for the extensive use of propofol as a component of balanced anesthesia and for its great popularity as an anesthetic for use... [Pg.601]

Because the physiological and pharmacological properties of caffeine represent the cumulative effects of not only the parent compound but also its metabolites, it is quite possible that effects attributed to caffeine per se are in fact mediated by one or more of its metabolites. It must also be noted that most of the knowledge about caffeine s effects has been derived from acute administration to fasted subjects submitted to a period of caffeine abstinence in order to ensure low plasma caffeine concentrations. It is thus difficult to extrapolate the results to the usual pattern of caffeine consumption in which... [Pg.67]
