The bisphosphonate - upon reduction with lithiumaluminum hydride in ether at 0°C - produced the amide functionalized primary bisphosphine (1) in good yields [45]. This reaction proceeded to reduce the amide group in 1 to produce the amine functionaUzed primary bisphosphine (2) in <5% yields. The amido bisprimary phosphine 1 is an air stable crystalline solid whereas the amine compound 2 is an oxidatively stable liquid. Separation of 1 and 2 in pure forms was achieved using coliunn chromatography. The amidic bisprimary phosphine 1 was crystallized from chloroform and exhibits remarkable stability not only in the solid state but also in solution as well. The crystal structure of the air stable primary his-phosphine 1 as shown in Fig. 1 is unprecedented to date.

A template synthesis employing Ni(OAc)2, 2,5-dihydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-1,4-dithiane, and 3,3 -iminobis(propylamine) gave the water-soluble five-coordinate complex [Ni(495)], the crystal structure of which shows trigonal bipyramidal coordination of Ni11 with the central amine and terminal thiolates in plane and the two imino nitrogens in axial positions. Solvatochromism of the complex is interpreted in terms of S" H bonding, which may be of relevance to the catalytic cycle in hydrogenases.1341... 

Reduction of both nickel porphyrins and thiaporphyrins to Ni1 species has been studied by EPR and 2H NMR spectroscopy.179, 2 58 The Ni1 complex of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21-thiaporphyrin has been isolated and characterized.
