When sand is used as a filler, the composite is referred to as a polymer mortar. Other fillers include crushed stone, gravel, limestone, chalk, condensed silica fume (silica flour, silica dust), granite, quartz, clay, expanded glass, and metallic fillers. Generally, any dry, nonabsorbent, solid material can be used as filler [4],... [Pg.1]

The fillers or inclusions are used as particles or grains of various shapes and dimensions. They are introdnced into the matrix for different reasons to improve the mechanical properties by hard particles in sufficient volume fraction, to control crack propagation or, in the case of small particles, to control the movements of dislocations. Sometimes cheap and porous inclusions are introduced to decrease the material cost or to improve the thermal insulation properties. The inclusions may be made of superhard particles, crushed stones, sand, voids filled with air or specially produced gas, etc. In laminar composites, internal layers are often made of cheap and lightweight materials only to maintain the distance between external rigid and hard layers and thus to increase the overall stiffness. [Pg.9]

The major filler uses of calcirun carbonate, both natmal and PCC, are paper, paint, adhesives and sealants, and polymers. Filler uses accormt for only about 1% of the 700 to 800 million metric tons of calcirun carbonate produced in the United States annually. Production is overwhelmingly dominated by commodity, low-value crushed stone, mainly for civil engineering uses and as aggregate for concrete and asphalt. [Pg.26]

In addition to the cement gel, there is present in concrete an aggregate of crushed stone that acts as a filler material. The Portland cement paste serves to bond together the aggregate particles in much the same way as a bond material present in a refractory brick or an abrasive wheel. [Pg.201]

As the filler, a mineral powder produced by crushing a lime stones was used. [Pg.35]
