The dimensions of the unit in the basal plane closely approximate those for the similarly pseudohexagonal crystal hydrargillite, Al(OH)3, as well as of the hexagonal layers in two forms of silica, /3-tridymite and 0-cristo-balite. Cristobalite is transparent. We do not normally consider devitrified glass as a transparent material. However, once fused silica has cooled below 250°C, B-cristobalite is transformed into a-cristo-balite. This substance is the white opaque material we usually associate with devitrified silica. When fused silica is reheated into the devitrification range, the a-cristobalite turns back into B-cristobalite. However, because a-cristobalite has many fissures and cracks, the opacity remains when it is reheated back into B-cristobalite. 

Just as the three-dimensional type of structure of SiOz occurs in the felspars as a consequence of isomorphous substitution, phosphates such as A1P04 and BPO4, in which A1 and B both have a coordination number four, also have structures which correspond to those of the SiOa modifications, quartz and cristo-balite, respectively. 

A fully hydroxylated state in which all the OH groups are bound to Si atoms (with N(OU) = 4.6 OH nm-2) would correspond to the octahedral, (111), face of /J-cristo-balite or the basal face of /J-tridymite. However, as indicated in Table 10.5, the surface hydroxyl concentrations found on some arc and fume silicas are significantly lower, typical values being in the range 3.4-4 OH nm 2 (Baker and Sing, 1976 Unger, 1979, p. 62 Gallas et al., 1991).

Charles A. West, chairman of the National Wholesale Druggists Association, and Albert Plaut, representing Lehn and Fink, a New York pharmaceutical firm, spoke against the proposal, claiming that the notion that cannabis was in any way a harmful drug was based more on literary fantasy such as that found in The Count of Monte Cristo than on fact. An illustration of this type of analysis is provided by the catalysis associated to the electrochemical oxidation of cysteine at electrodes modified with vanadium-doped zircons, V,jZrSiO4, prepared from sol-gel methodologies (Domenech and Alarcon, 2003). Figure 3.12 shows x-ray diffraction patterns for VxZrSiO4 specimens after annealing the corresponding gel precursor at 1600°C for 24 h. Here, well-defined diffraction peaks of zircon, eventually accompanied by one cristo-balite peak, appear.
