Creating Differentiation

Measurable indicators of sustainability reputation include a company s regulatory compliance record, third-party recognition and awards, participation in environmental/sustainability consortia, and extent of community development and philanthropic support.

As discussed above, deposits can cause accelerated localized corrosion by creating differential aeration cells. This same phenomenon occurs with a biofilm. The nonuniform nature of biofilm formation creates an inherent differential, which is enhanced by the oxygen consumption of organisms in the biofilm. 

Gas-Liquid Chromatography. In gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) the stationary phase is a liquid. GLC capillary columns are coated internally with a liquid (WCOT columns) stationary phase. As discussed above, in GC the interaction of the sample molecules with the mobile phase is very weak. Therefore, the primary means of creating differential adsorption is through the choice of the particular liquid stationary phase to be used. The basic principle is that analytes selectively interact with stationary phases of similar chemical nature. For example, a mixture of nonpolar components of the same chemical type, such as hydrocarbons in most petroleum fractions, often separates well on a column with a nonpolar stationary phase, while samples with polar or polarizable compounds often resolve well on the more polar and/or polarizable stationary phases. Reference 7 is a metabolomics example of capillary GC-MS. 

A yeast two-hybrid screening system was developed to screen for small molecules that inhibit the interaction of the Ras and the Raf proteins. Hyperpermeable yeast strains useful for high-throughput screening (HTS) for the two-hybrid system were created. Differential inhibition of the Ras-Raf vs the hsRPB4-hsRPB7 interaction allowed the identification of selective inhibitors. 

VENTURI TUBE METER - A fiow meter used to determine the rate of fiow and employing a venturi tube as the primary element for creating differential pressure in flowing gases or liquids. 

The purpose of a joint is to transfer load, which will create differential stress between the components as well as in the joining medium, whether festeners or adhesive. Figure 5.91 has diagrams that illustrate the basic mechanisms that identify (a) single cover butt joint, (b) adhesive in shear (c) fastener in shear, and (d) bending of plates at ends of a joint.

In some patients, inflammatory changes can be so intense that infravesical obstruction with bilateral hydronephrosis is created. In addition to asset-sharing that produces economy of scale benefits, the platform assets display strong interdependence with other assets on the platform. The platform products are characterized by low variety and high commonality, while the non-platform products reveal high variety and little commonality. With a platform, companies can easily increase the breadth of their product portfolio and create differentiation by adding non-platform assets as add-ons. This combination of platform and non-platform assets enables companies to serve multiple market segments. 

Table 3.6 shows 13 metrics at level 1 in the SCOR model, and is taken from the SCOR website (www.supply-chain.org). As with processes, the model s hierarchical stmcture is repeated also for the metrics. That means that the SCOR model provides a breakdown of level 2 and level 3 subcomponents of the level 1 performance metrics. The intention is that an individual company should not attempt to be best in class in all areas. Rather, a given company should target its strength in four to six selected areas to create differentiation in the marketplace. The company will also need to ensure that it stays competitive in the other areas.
