Covalent bonds defined

Organic molecules are generally composed of covalent bonded atoms with several well-defined hybridization states tending to have well-understood preferred geometries. This makes them an ideal case for molecular mechanics parameterization. Likewise, organic molecules are the ideal case for semiempirical parameterization.

The ylides may be defined as dipolar compounds in which a carbanion is covalently bonded to a positively charged heteroatom. They are represented by the following general formula ... 

A 1 1 mixture of thiols (7 and 2), on treatment with oxygen in the presence of a catalytic amount of Et3N, gives one unsymmetrical (4) and two symmetrical disulfides (3 and 5) (Eq. 4). As a measure of the degree of the recognition between 7 and 2 in the oxidation, the selectivity (r) is employed which is represented by the logarithmic ratio of the yield of 4 to twice that of 3 (Eq. 5). The r is so defined as to become zero when oxidation yields the three disulfides in a 1 2 1 ratio. In the present case, the recognition process is followed by covalent bond formation. 

In the discussion of metallic radii we may make a choice between two immediate alternative procedures. The first, which I shall adopt, is to consider the dependence of the radius on the type of the bond, defined as the number (which may be fractional) of shared electron pairs involved (corresponding to the single, double, and triple bonds in ordinary covalent molecules and crystals), and then to consider separately the effect of resonance in stabilizing the crystal and decreasing the interatomic distance. This procedure is similar to that which we have used in the discussion of interatomic distances in resonating molecules.7 The alternative procedure would be to assign to each bond a number, the bond order, to represent the strength of the bond with inclusion of the resonance effect as well as of the bond type.8... 

An interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) is defined as a material comprising two or more networks which are at least partly interlaced on a molecular scale, hut not covalently bonded to each other. These networks caimot he separated unless chemical bonds are broken. Two possible methods exist for preparing them, as follows ... 

An affinity label is a molecule that contains a functionality that is chemically reactive and will therefore form a covalent bond with other molecules containing a complementary functionality. Generally, affinity labels contain electrophilic functionalities that form covalent bonds with protein nucleophiles, leading to protein alkylation or protein acylation. In some cases affinity labels interact selectively with specific amino acid side chains, and this feature of the molecule can make them useful reagents for defining the importance of certain amino acid types in enzyme function. For example, iodoacetate and A-ethyl maleimide are two compounds that selectively modify the sulfur atom of cysteine side chains. These compounds can therefore be used to test the functional importance of cysteine residues for an enzyme s activity. This topic is covered in more detail below in Section 8.4.
