Coupling agents, preparation

In this chapter, the preparation of silica/PI composites by in situ polymerization and sol-gel process methods are introduced, and then the stmcture of the composites are discussed. Finally, the effects of coupling agent, preparation process, and filler content on the optical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the composite films are discussed. To differentiate between silica/PI composites prepared by these two methods, the silica/PI composites prepared by the sol-gel process are named S-silica/PI, and silica/PI composites prepared by the in situ polymerization silica tube (T-silica) are named T-silica/PI. [Pg.330]

Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is a solvent and coupling agent for a phosphate-type insecticide used to control the gypsy moth. Esters of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol are used in preparations employed as insect repeUents. Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is also used as a solvent—carrier for an EPA-approved paper sHmicide formulation. In this appHcation, the exceptional solvent action of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol prevents separation of the... [Pg.82]

Most antiperspirant sticks are molded. Sticks dominate in the U.S. market, whereas lotion and cream antiperspirants are preferred in Europe. Stick antiperspirant products may include suspending agents, coupling agents to wet the antiperspirant chemical (about 20—25%), and emoUients. The blend is prepared at about 65°C and poured at about 55°C. Antiperspirant (64) and deodorant (65) compositions have been pubHshed. [Pg.299]

Apart from the materials described earlier, formulations usually include other organics, including coupling agents, antifoams, and surfactants. A commonly employed raw material is polyethylene glycol (PEG) in the form of perhaps PEG-8 oleate or PEG-6 distearate. This surfactant material is used as a metal surface cleaner. It prepares the metal surface to receive inhibitors and improve DCA surface mechanisms. [Pg.454]

Iodosobenzene diacetate is used as a reagent for the preparation of glycol diacetates from olefins,9 for the oxidation of aromatic amines to corresponding azo compounds,10 for the ring acetylation of N-arylacetamides,11 for oxidation of some phenols to phenyl ethers,12 and as a coupling agent in the preparation of iodonium salts.13 Its hydrolysis to iodosobenzene constitutes the best synthesis of that compound.14... [Pg.64]

Ethylene-vinyl acetate Fetterman [37] reinforced compounded ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer by using short hbers and found that silane coupling agents were effective at establishing improved hber-matrix adhesion. Das et al. [38] prepared carbon fiber-filled conductive composites based on EVA and studied the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of the composites. [Pg.354]

A second industrially important field in which silanols play a vital role is in the preparation of polysiloxanes, often known as silicones. As in the case of silane coupling agents, there is a vast literature available on the topic of polysiloxanes, and only the most general discussion will be given here, concentrated on the reactions that involve silanols. [Pg.152]

A series of thiol and selenolesters can be prepared from carboxylic acids and the coupling agents CDI, oxalyldiimidazole, or oxalylditriazole via the corresponding carboxylic acid azolides (Tables 3-7 and 3-9). [Pg.73]

Thiolesters prepared with coupling agents other than CDI (A, B, and C below) are listed in Table 3-9. [Pg.75]

In some examples it is not necessary to prepare the organometallic-coupling agent R2MX2 beforehand. Thus coating glass fibres with a heptane or alcohol solution of titanium alkoxide promotes adhesion between the fibre and polymer, e.g., acrylic, polyolefins, polyester, polyamide and other thermoplastic resins. [Pg.113]

Figure 14.25 The preparation of highly controlled fluorescent silica nanoparticles can be done by first polymerizing APTS that has been covalently modified with an amine-reactive dye to form fluorescent core particles. The core then is capped by a shell of silica by polymerization of TEOS. The shell layer can be further derivatized with silane coupling agents to provide functional groups for conjugation. The hydrophilic SiO substrate)static water contact angle 0=3O°) was prepared by vapor-deposited SiO onto a Formvar substrate[4], with which an electron microscope grid(200-mesh) was covered. The relatively hydrophobic siliconized substrate(0=9O°) was also prepared by surface siliconized treatment a collodion-covered electron microscope grid was dipped into an aqueous solution of silane coupling agent. [Pg.12]

Bazan and Schrock were the first to use ROMP of norbornene to prepare star polymers [108], As the coupling agent of the living polymer they used a norbor-nadiene dimer that plays the role of difunctional core-forming monomer as shown below ... [Pg.84]

A procedure used in the self-branching polymerization reaction for the preparation of dendritic polystyrenes is outlined in Scheme 7. Oligomeric polystyryl-lithium chains are reacted with a coupling agent such as 4-(chlorodimethyl-silyl)styrene (CDMSS), which contains both a polymerizable double bond as well... [Pg.232]
