Suppose that a claimed invention defined a copying machine with features resulting in an improved precision of reproduction and suppose further that an embodiment of this apparatus could comprise further features (not claimed but apparent to the skilled person) the only purpose of which would be that it should also allow reproduction of security strips in banknotes strikingly similar to those in genuine banknotes. In such a case, the claimed apparatus would cover an embodiment for producing counterfeit money which could be considered to fall under Article 53(a) EPC. There is, however, no reason to consider the copying machine as claimed to be excluded since its improved properties could be used for many acceptable purposes . [Pg.376]

In 2000, most European countries switched from their traditional currencies to the euro. Lanthanide luminescence is used as a means of preventing counterfeit euro banknotes from passing into the money chain. Excitation of euro banknotes with ultraviolet light results in fluorescence in the red, green and blue regions due to complexes of europium (Eu3+), terbium (Tb3+) and thulium (Tm3+), respectively, that are present in the banknotes. [Pg.75]

Working in Japan, the money artist Akasegawa also explored the relationship between capitalism and state authority. His notes were not counterfeit, but simulacra, and as such they put into question the validity of all money by mocking the yen. Like Boggs, Akasegawa was also severely prosecuted. [Pg.139]

Many Militants rob banks for operating expenses. It is pretty easy to get caught and go to jail for ten years, that is, if you don t get shot and killed. Counterfeiting is a lot less risky and the sentence is about the same if you are caught passing funny money. Also,... [Pg.53]

So, having nothing better to do, they approached this ex-counterfeiter and promised him 20,000 in real money to print them up a million in phoney hundreds. Creating a taxonomic category—say, money, fish, or illness —implies a commitment to excluding items that do not belong in it, especially deliberate imitations. Counterfeit is not money, dolphins are not fish, and imaginary illnesses are not diseases. The fact that psychogenic illnesses seem real to patients as well as doctors, or that both want to treat them as if they were illnesses, is irrelevant to this conclusion. [Pg.36]

Yet, the infamous Faustian objectives of unbelievable wealth and the Elixir of Life have also kindled the worst of human greed and avarice. The outcome was often disastrous for all involved. Loss of money, counterfeiting, swindles and murder. As a result, alchemy s daughter, Science, led the world to believe that she had abandoned the pursuits of her mother in the sixteenth century. However, chemistry, physics, metallurgy, medicine and pharmaceuticals all flourished. [Pg.8]

Chemists are heavily involved in the manufacture of our currency. In fact, in a very real way, the money industry depends on chemistry and finding substances with the correct properties. The most common paper currency in the United States is the dollar bill. Chemistry is used to form the ink and paper and in processes used to defeat counterfeiters. The ink used on currency has to do a variety of things. It must be just the right consistency to fill the fine lines of the printing plate and release onto the paper without smearing. The ink must dry almost immediately, since the sheets of currency fly out of the press and into stacks 10,000 sheets tall. The pressure at the bottom of the stack is large, and the ink must not stick to the back of the sheet above it. [Pg.63]
