Fig. 34. Model of a functionalised (internally or externally) SWNT, which may be closed, open and/or corked reversibly or permanently after filling. Potentially the inner cavity may be filled with a (radio)-imaging agent (for PET/SPECT and/or MRI) or a (radio)therapeutic agent. Such functionalized SWNTs may conceivably act as probe prototype for multimodal imaging/therapy and targeted drug delivery (155). Fig. 34. Now set your hotplate near the kitchen sink with the plastic bucket beside it with the water vent hole just over the sink. Stick the top end of the tubing just through the cork and press modelling clay around it to stop any fumes or steam from leaking out around the tube. [Pg.102]

It is expected that science teacher is capable of devising and making apparatus for some simple experiments, modify apparatus and carry out simple repairs. The apparatus devised and made in school work shop or laboratory by the teacher or student is known as home-made apparatus. A science teacher with a little thought and ingenuity can make a number of valuable and serviceable models making use of cheap materials such as Jam-Jars, bits of wire, corks, motor parts etc. Some of the advantages of using home-made apparatus are as under ... [Pg.246]

Figure 7. Voltage-gating channel model of alamethicin proposed by Fox and Richards (77). On the left is the structure for the helical bundle partially inserted in the absence of an applied voltage. The C-terminal residues are shown as helical ribbons that indicate extended random coil structures, or as cork-shaped a-helical structures partially buried on the surface of the membrane. The middle structure is an intermediate produced by application of voltage, and the right panel represents the open state that traverses the membrane. (Reproduced with permission from reference 77. Such abstract models of wire or cardboard are rather misleading when atomic interactions are considered, and a model assembled from balls—e.g., cork or polystyrene—is very valuable, though not easy to... [Pg.178]

The space relations involved can be more readily understood by a study of models. These can be made from pieces of cork of different size or shape, and stout wires pointed at both ends. [Pg.96]

For the screw extruder in ceramics, ideal means minimum friction between mass and screw at maximum friction btween mass and cylinder to prevent the mass stopper from turning as well. In the literature, this approach has become known as the cork screw model . [Pg.201]

The next activity moves from using a model to actually considering materials, so use boiling tubes sealed with bungs or corks (rather than everyday containers like jam jars) to indicate that you are looking at the kind of examples of interest to chemists. [Pg.13]

On articulated vehicle modeling and SMC application, many researchers have revealed approaches. More analytically, in Ridley and Corke (2003), Lee and Yoo (2009), Nayl et al. (2012), kinematics model of articulated vehicle and error model between real and reference path are presented, and the path tracking simulation with model predictive control is applied, while in Petrov and Chakyrski (2009) the feedback controller based on Lyapunov approach is designed. The simulations in these literatures are non-real-time. The real-time feature is not verified. Moreover, in Korayem et al. (2012), the spatial cable robot path planning is presented, while in Aslam et al. (2014) the fuzzy SMC is used for path tracking of the four-wheel skid steer vehicle. Both the literatures have designed the controller of SMC. However, the models of the plants are distinct from the articulated vehicle. [Pg.323]

Engineers at CWS strengthened the fuze to withstand harder impacts, replaced metal vent plugs with cork, and developed a better first fire mixture. The improved bomb, AN-M50A2, slightly lighter and thinner than its predecessor, functioned well. As fast as the new munitions came from plants they were shipped to Europe and used. The earlier model remained in reserve until 1944 when it was discarded. ... [Pg.173]

With more complicated molecules, particularly with ring compounds, it is often difficult to predict whether a compound will be optically active. One reliable rule states that any molecular structure will exist in two optical antipodes if it cannot be superimposed completely with its mirror image. This decision can be reached most easily by means of models. In general, it is true that the various stereochemical relations can be appreciated fully only if one constructs models of the molecules, which may be achieved with rather simple means. For example, corks and pins, or soft wax and sections of wire, may help to improvise models adequate for many considerations. [Pg.18]
