Cork injection

Figure 53.4 displays the distribution of a substance with AH° = —84 kJ/mol via cork injection. The ordinate shows the relative concentration, namely per cent of the injected substance, over the column length corresponding to AT= 1 K. Curves 1, 2, and 3 are for the sample injection times equal to 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 of the experiment time fexp- The peaks, which result from the infinite number of divisions (100) of the injection profile, clearly show the motion of the substance in the TCC and the gradual compression (concentration) of the adsorption zone. For example, at the experiment period = 100 the extreme right peak... [Pg.2438]

The next example is used to demonstrate how different pathways could produce the same pheromone component. Helicoverpa zea and Helicoverpa assulta are closely related species that use aldehydes as the major pheromone. Helicoverpa zea uses a blend of components with Z11-16 Aid as the major component, and minor components include 16 Ald, Z9-16 Aid, and Z7-16 Aid (Klun et al., 1980). H. assulta uses Z9-16 Ald as the major component and Z11-16 Aid as a minor component (Cork et al., 1992 Sugie et al., 1991). The biosynthesis of Zll-16 Aid occurs by Al 1 desaturation of 16 CoA to produce Z1 l-16 CoA, which is reduced to the aldehyde. This probably occurs in both species, but Z9-16 Ald could be produced by the action of a A9 desaturase using 16 CoA as a substrate or by the Al 1 desaturation of 18 CoA to produce Zll-18 CoA that is then chain shortened to Z9-16 CoA. To determine between these two pathways, deuterium-labeled precursors were applied topically to the glands in dimethyl sulfoxide and females injected with PBAN 1 h later the glands were extracted and analyzed for incorporation using GC/MS (Choi et al., 2002). Figure 3.4 shows the data and biosynthetic pathways. [Pg.59]

It was easy to devise a test to assess the risk of ferric casse and the effectiveness of various treatments. A clear glass bottle, half filled with wine, is injected with oxygen. It is corked, agitated and placed, cork down, in a refrigerator in the dark. A wine highly susceptible to casse will become turbid within 48 hours. If the wine stays clear for a week, it will not suffer from ferric casse. [Pg.98]

Figure 3.26 In addition to glass roving a number of other materials can be co-injected with PU using the InterWet technology, scrap PU foams, sand, ground cork and other fillers that would be difficult to add in the component tank. Gas-injection molding n. A specialized technique for molding low-density structures in which a mixture containing cork particles, or glass or phenolic microspheres, glass fibers, and a thermosetting resin is injected into a mold by fluidizing it in a gas stream. [Pg.451]

A truly superficial neoplastic lesion, i.e. one limited to the mucosa may be successfully removed by the endoscopic route. The lesion is checked hy chromoendoscopy and its borders marked out with small burns from a heater probe or hot biopsy forceps. The mucosectomy starts with injection of submucosal, 2-ml aliquots of saline around the lesion. When elevated sufficiently it is ensnared with an open polypectomy snare and removed, preferably in one piece. The specimen should then be mounted on a cork plate so that the histopathologist can scrutinise the cut surface for any sign of tumour infiltration. If this is present the patient should have a final surgical removal. [Pg.45]
