Periodic experiments

The latter may be fiirther subdivided into transient experiments, in which the current and potential vary with time in a non-repetitive fashion steady-state experiments, in which a unique interrelation between current and potential is generated, a relation that does not involve time or frequency and in which the steady-state current achieved is independent of the method adopted and periodic experiments, in which current and potential vary periodically with time at some imposed frequency. [Pg.1922]

There are two major areas of study implied in this analysis of the problem. First, how can we reduce the smell at source or restrict the production of odour to acceptable levels and defined period. The results obtained with the 3,4-di-O-methylmannitol—periodate system are preliminary. However, we have found no evidence that the mixture of 2,3-di-O-methylarabinose tautomers sampled after 15 seconds of reaction is appreciably richer in furanose forms than the equilibrium mixture. In a control experiment a furanose-rich mixture of 2,3-di-O-methylarabinose anomers was generated by heating the sugar in pyridine, and the reversion to the normal equilibrium mixture in water was followed polarimetrically at 5°C. The halftime for the process was 4.4 minutes. Thus, it should be possible to determine whether the furanose forms are the preponderant initial products of the cyclization of aldehydo-2,3-di-O-methylarabinose in periodate experiments. Data processing methods provide a substitute for the missing description of analytical data. Repeated measurements of the same water source are occasionally available. In such cases a mean value may be calculated for each parameter (dissolved ions, pH, or temperature). The standard deviations of these values serve as an estimate of the analytical error. In fact, these standard deviations also incorporate the natural fluctuations in the measured water source. Therefore, these mean deviations serve as conservative estimates to the analytical errors. Another explanation for the initial period of no wear is that the polyimide and ball surfaces were contaminated by a film. This film caused low friction and surface stresses below that required for immediate wear particle generation. The initial period is the time during which the film is worn away resulting in an increase in adhesion, increase in surface stress, and subsequent wear particle formation. Obviously, both fatigue and contaminant film removal could be operative during the initiation period. While a static load test is the commonly accepted procedure, in practice many variations in areas and weights are used, to compensate for the various qualities of adhesive evaluated, so that the test results will fall into a similar time frame, so it becomes difficult to compare different adhesive systems from accumulated data. It has the disadvantage of giving variable results for the same adhesive system, and is essentially a pass/ fail test, as many products remain in place at the end of the test period.
