Copolymers are composed of two or more monomers. Source-based names are conveniently employed to describe copolymers using an appropriate term between the names of the monomers. Any of half a dozen or so connecting terms may be used depending on what is known about the structure of the copolymer. When no information is known or intended to be conveyed, the connective term co is employed in the general format poly(A-co-B), where A and B are the names of the two monomers. An unspecified copolymer of styrene and methyl methacrylate would be called poly[styrene-co-(methyl methacrylate)]. 

These can combine in turn in a polymeric chain in a variety of ways, resulting in types such as unspecified, statistical, random, alternating, periodic, block and graft copolymers. 

Stumpe and his co-workers [ 122-124] synthesized several SCLC methaciy-late copolymers containing the photochromic N-salicylideneaniline (NSA) chro-mophore together with several other mesogenic and nonmesogenic groups. Copolymers, 58, had from 0 to 100% of the NSA chromophore. Most of these polymers had an unspecified 5 mesophase. The NSA chromophore undergoes an excited state proton transfer (Fig. 17) to the Z-keto (often called cw-keto form)... 

Copolymerization is a variant of polymerization where macromolecules composed of two or more kinds of monomer are formed. According to the frequency of entry of various monomers into the chains, copolymers (and even the reactions by which they are formed) are sometimes more closely specified by special attributes. Thus copolymers may be unspecified, statistical, random, periodic, alternating, block or graft. 

The building of copolymers even with an unspecified distribution of monomeric units in the macromolecules certainly obeys some rules. Either these rules are as yet unknow or else it remains unclear which of the known rules have been operating this kind of copolymer is designated poly(M[-co--M2. ..) [3] where M, M2, M3. .. are the various monomers.

The solidus denotes an unspecified arrangement of the units within the main chain. " For example, a statistical copolymer derived from styrene and vinyl chloride with the monomeric units joined head-to-tail is named poly(l-chloroethylene/l-phenyleth-ylene) . A polymer obtained by 1,4-polymerization and both head-to-head and head-to-tail 1,2- polymerization of 1,3-butadiene would be named poly(but-l-ene-l,4-diyl/l-vinylethylene/2-vinyl-ethylene) In graphic representations of these polymers, shown in Figure 2, the hyphens or dashes at each end of each CRU depiction are shown completely within the enclosing parentheses this indicates that they are not necessarily the terminal bonds of the macromolecule. 

The crosslinking of finear polystyrene as well as styrene—DVB copolymers dispersed in excess aqueous solutions of Lewis acids is accompanied by a certain loss, due to a noticeable solubifity of both EDC and the cross-linking agents MCDE or DMM, in the catalytic mixture. The unspecified change in the concentration of the main reaction partners, particularly at an elevated temperature, makes it more difficult to correctly evaluate the relationships between the conditions of synthesis and the properties of the resulting hypercrosslinked products. Still, the use of very inexpensive aqueous catalytic solutions for the preparation of beaded hypercrossfinked materials from industrially available linear polystyrene may be of practical significance. 

For unspecified or unknown copolymers the name is poly(monomer 1-co-monomer 2). 

Vanneste and Groeninckx investigated the miscibility of SMA copolymers with various MA contents with PCL. These workers found SMA-2 to be immiscible with PCL. SMA-17 and SMA-28 were found to be totally miscible with PCL while SMA-8 and SMA-14 exhibited partial miscibility and LCST behaviour [149]. The discrepancy with the previous work [148] was stated to be because these latter studies used polymers of higher (unspecified) molecular weight [149]. 

An equally acceptable alternative scheme, shown in the last column of Table 3, utilizes the prefix copoly followed by citation of the names of the monomers used, separated from each other by a solidus (oblique stroke). Parentheses are also needed. For example, copoly(styrene/butadiene) denotes an unspecified copolymer of styrene and butadiene. The other connectives of Table 3...
