However, in 531 eligible patients enrolled in a US Public Health Service Cooperative Trial of Short-Course Chemotherapy of Pulmonary Tuberculosis, of whom 58% were classified as alcoholic, although the alcoholics had more abnormal concentrations of aspartate transaminase before and during therapy, there was no significant difference between the alcoholics and non-alcoholics in the incidence of adverse reactions, including hepatotoxic reactions (92). The authors concluded that in the absence of clinically significant and persistent pretreatment abnormalities of hepatic function tests, rifampicin and isoniazid are not contraindicated in patients categorized as alcoholic. 

Reserpine was used as a third-line agent in many of the landmark clinical trials that have documented its benefit in treating hypertension, including the VA Cooperative trials and, most important, the SHEP trial. An analysis of the SHEP data found that reserpine was very well tolerated. The combination of a diuretic and reserpine is very effective at lowering BP, and this is a very inexpensive antihypertensive regimen. 

No long-term endpoint studies in patients with diabetic nephropathy have yet been published, but in nondiabetic nephropathy data from two studies are now available. In the COOPERATE trial 263 Japanese patients with nondiabetic renal disease (calculated GFR 20-70 mL/min) were randomly assigned ARB (losartan, 100 mg daily), ACE-1 (trandolapril, 3 mg daily) or a combination of both drugs at equivalent doses. After 3 years, significantly fewer patients [10 (11%) of 85] in the dual-blockade group had reached the combined primary endpoint of time to doubling of serum creatinine or ESRD...

Proficiency testing or laboratory performance study or round-robin study Cooperative trial... 

Proficiency tests are conducted by accrediting authorities or similar bodies as a method of comparing the performance of laboratories and maintaining their accreditation. Usually, these studies are ongoing with an appropriate frequency. Single proficiency tests, called cooperative trials, as a one-off assessment of a laboratory s ability to perform a particular test, may be undertaken among laboratories being considered for a contract for outsourced chemical analysis.
