Large billets of the rare earth metals with the exception of Eu can be cut on an oil-cooled power hack saw or water-cooled carborundum cut-off wheel. Since the reactivity of these metals increases with temperature, any method chosen should have a means of keeping the metal cool. Intermediate size billets can be cut with a hack saw, but must be kept cool to prevent contamination especially by hydrogen which is formed by reaction of the metal with H2O. The metal chips from sawing the light lanthanides, especially Ce and La, wilTreadily ignite and... [Pg.202]

The thermal profile through the reactor will in most circumstances be carefully optimized to maximize selectivity, extend catalyst life, etc. Because of this, direct heat integration with other process streams is almost never carried out. The heat transfer to or from the reactor is instead usually carried out by a heat transfer intermediate. For example, in exothermic reactions, cooling might occur by boiling water to raise steam, which, in turn, can be used to heat cold streams elsewhere in the process. [Pg.327]

If a heat transfer intermediate is to be used and the cooling/ heating medium is fixed, then the cooling/heating medium should... [Pg.327]

The term distillation is applied to vaporisation and subsequent condensation according to (i) it should also be applied to (ii) since it is really the liquid which is converted into vapour and is first formed by condensation. Strictly speaking, the term sublimation should be applied to changes according to (iii). However, in practice, a substance when heated may first melt and then boil, but on cooling it may pass directly from the vapour to the solid the process is then also called sublimation. Indeed the mode of vaporisation, whether directly from solid to vapour or through the intermediate formation of a liquid, is of secondary importance it is the direct conversion of vapour to solid which is really the outstanding feature of sublimation in the laboratory. [Pg.37]

A solution of 2-aminobenzophenone (98 g, 0.50 mol) and methyl 2-(methyl-thio)propanoate (74 g, 0,50 mol) in CH Clj (21) was cooled to —70 C and 95% 7-butyl hypochlorite (56 g, 0.5 mol) was added dropwise at such a rate that the temperature did not rise above — 65 C. One hour after the addition was complete, EtjN was added and the mixture was allowed to come to room temperature. The solution w as mixed with 3 N HCl (800 ml) and stirred for 1 h. The organic layer was separated, dried (Na2S04 ) and filtered. The solution was evaporated in vacuo and the residue triturated with ether. Filtration gave the 3-(methylthio)oxindole intermediate (92 g) in 62% yield. [Pg.73]

Methane oxidations occur only by intermediate and high temperature mechanisms and have been reported not to support cool flames (104,105). However, others have reported that cool flames do occur in methane oxidation, even at temperatures >400 ° C (93,94,106,107). Since methyl radicals caimot participate in reactions 23 or 24, some other mechanism must be operative to achieve the quenching observed in methane cool flames. It has been proposed that the interaction of formaldehyde and its products with radicals decreases their concentrations and inhibits the whole oxidation process (93). [Pg.340]
