Continuous current generation

There are four basic variations of the linear MHD channel (Fig. 5) which differ primarily in their method of electrical loading. The simplest is the two-terrninal Faraday or continuous electrode generator, Figure 5a, where a single pair of current-collecting electrodes spans the channel in the axial direction, short-circuiting the channel from end to end. Hence, for this configuration, = 0, andj can be obtained from equations 21 and 22 ...

The El source has been the most widely used ion source over the past 60 years and continues to be the method of choice for the analysis (either qualitative or quantitative) of small- to medium-sized volatile organic compounds. The inherent reproducibility of the mass spectra has enabled the assembly of large spectral libraries. Computers associated with current generation instruments can efficiently (in a few seconds) search an unknown mass spectrum against tens of thousands of reference spectra in order to aid in the identification of an analyte. The general scheme of an El source includes the introduction of the vaporized analyte molecules into the ionization chamber, exposure of those molecules... 

The useful life of a practical primary battery is determined principally by the nature of its discharge pattern. Thus the best way of assessing a system for some particular application is to subject it to a discharge which simulates the service conditions. Tests have therefore been developed which recognize the principal function of various types of battery and specify the generation of intermittent or continuous currents of appropriate levels. Such procedures have been standardized for batteries of uniform size and cell configuration by bodies such as the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). In chemistry also, we are now conscious of the continuity of man s intellectual effort no longer does the current generation view the work of its forerunners with a disdainful lack of appreciation andfar from claiming infallibility, each successive age recognizes the duty of developing its heritage from the past. 

The rate of addition of titrant should never be excessive, and this of course applies to biamperometric titrations carried out under continuous current/titrant volume recording. For example, there are titrations where bromine is generated as the titrant to brominate an unsaturated organic as analyte. Too rapid a generation of the bromine depolarizer relative to the speed of bromination can prematurely trigger an endpoint indication where the titration has been set to dead-stop at a specific current value.
