Contamination sodium dodecyl sulfate removal

Columns can be washed with solvents and solvent combinations suitable to remove adsorbed contaminants. When considering the adsorption of analytes, think not only of the diol functionality, but also of the adsorption to residual silanols. Often, the injection of small amounts (500 /d) of dimethyl sulfoxide removes contamination that has accumulated on the column. Aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate, guanidine hydrochloride, or urea are compatible with Protein-Pak columns. 

Increased removal of phenanthrene from soil columns spiked with the rhamnolipid mixture synthesized by Pseudomonas aeruginosa UG2 has been demonstrated, and shown to depend both on the increased desorption of the substrate and on partitioning into micelles (Noordman et al. 1998). However, the addition of the biosurfactant from the same strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa UG2 or of sodium dodecyl sulfate had no effect on the rate of biodegradation of anthracene and phenanthrene from a chronically contaminated soil. 

The washing system was used by Zhang and Lo (2007). They investigated the effects of the operating conditions, the initial concentrations of marine diesel fuel (MDF) and the coexisting Pb, and the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in a solution on MDF removal by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS).They performed the optimization of the process parameters and determined the MDF removal efficiency by SDS under different contamination conditions. 

Sodium dodecyl sulfate is a potent detergent of pronounced cytotoxicity that strongly interferes with many enzyme-catalyzed processes. Because of its wide application in the life sciences it represents a common potential contaminant of laboratory samples. Both insufficient removal of the compound after application in experimental protocols and accidental contamination may cause severe problems. To provide a simple yet sensitive method for scrutinizing suspicious samples, we have developed the protocol given in the following as also described earlier (Arand et al., 1992). The procedure is based on formation of the ion pair SDS and methylene blue and subsequent extraction of this complex with chloroform. 

Surfactants can be classified by the charge of the hydrophilic group as cationic, anionic, neutral, and zwitterionic (includes positive and negative charges in the same molecule). The use of surfactants for the removal of COC by electrokinetics has been demonstrated in literature [17]. Several surfactants have been used such as Brij 35, TritonX-100, Sodium dodecyl sulfate, Tween 80, and Igepal CA-720, but COC removal results largely depend on surfactant nature and dosage, characteristics of the soil and contaminant, and operation conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to test the surfactant for each application [8]. 

Equally, sodium dodecyl sulfate contaminations should be removed from 2D gel electrophoresis before subjecting samples to MALDI-MS [128].
