Contact interactions principle

As discussed in Section I.3(i), AX indicates the variation in the work function of a metal as an interface is created by bringing a solid and a liquid in contact. In principle, it should be possible to compare AX values with A values measured directly in gas phase experiments. This is the aim of UHV synthesis of the electrochemical double layer868 in which the electrode interface is created molecule by molecule, starting with the bare metal surface. It is thus possible to obtain evidence of ion-water interactions that can be envisaged from electrochemical measurements but that are not directly demonstrable. Wagner55 has given a recent comprehensive review of electrochemical UHV experiments. [Pg.169]

Under certain conditions, particles of two different types of solid materials may react. This can be as a result of a more favorable match of character according to the hard-soft interaction principle. In order to make the structural units (usually ions) mobile, some energy source is normally apphed. The most common way to bring about the reaction between two sohds is by heating them in close contact. The application of pressure may also provide added inducement for the reaction to occur. [Pg.259]

There are three main mechanisms for indirect or J coupling, all mediated by the valence electrons. The most important involves the Fermi contact interaction of an s electron with the nucleus (with which p, d,... electrons have no contact). This can be envisaged in terms of the Dirac vector model. For simplicity we can consider the HF molecule, since both nuclei have spin 1/2 and positive magnetogyric ratios y. The bonding pair of electrons must have antiparallel spins (a]8) by the Pauli principle, and their motions are correlated such that if the one with a spin is near one nucleus, the one with )S spin is likely to be near the other. Within each nucleus the magnetic moments of the nucleus and the electron are more stable when parallel, so that the spins are antiparallel (since the electron has a negative y). The nuclear spins are... [Pg.9]

V (the potential) is identified with the enthalpy, i.e. the number n of base pairings (contacts), and T corresponds to the entropy. At each stage in the folding process, as many as possible new favourable intramolecular interactions are fonned, while minimizing the loss of confonnational freedom (the principle of sequential minimization of entropy loss, SMEL). The entropy loss associated with loop closure is (and the rate of loop closure exp... [Pg.2821]

A requirement underlying the validity of Zisman plots is that there be no specific interactions, such as acid-base interactions, between the solid surface and the probe liquids. Such interactions, however, can, in principle, be taken into account by Young s equation, provided the contact angle remains finite. Their... [Pg.24]
