Consumer photography

Another question of interest is to compute colors similar to the colors perceived by the photographer who took the image. Even though perceived color correlates with object reflectances, as we have seen in Section 2.5, there are also situations when this does not hold. This is described in Section 14.1. Creating an accurate model of human color perception would be a great step forward for consumer photography. 

Approximately half of the iodine consumed is used to make potassium iodide (see Iodine and iodine compounds). Production of KI is almost 1000 t/yr. Its main uses are in animal and human food, particularly in iodized salt, pharmaceuticals (qv), and photography (qv). 

Consumption. World consumption of silver in 1994, including the use of scrap, was about 23,300 t. Industrial and decorative uses consumed 8,690 t jewelry and silverware, 6,477 t photography, 6,820 t and official coins, 1,335 t. 

About 2.47 million kg of silver are lost each year to the domestic biosphere, mostly (82%) as a result of human activities. As discussed later, the photography industry accounts for about 47% of all silver discharged into the environment from anthropogenic sources. In 1990, about 50% of the refined silver consumed domestically was used to manufacture photographic products 25% in electrical and electronic products 10% in electroplated ware, sterlingware, and jewelry 5% in brazing alloys and 10% in other products and processes.

Potassium chloride is the most important salt of potassium from the perspective of its abundant occurrence and apphcations. This salt, along with potassium sulfate, is used heavily in fertilizers as the primary source of potassium, an essential element for crops. Over 90% salt manufactured is consumed as fertilizer. Also, potassium chloride is a raw material for producing potassium metal and several important potassium salts including potassium nitrate, potassium hydroxide, and potassium sulfate. Other applications are in electrode cells photography buffer solutions and measurement of salinity in water.
