Consolidation contact mechanics

The process by which a thermoplastic matrix composite consolidates to form a laminated structure has been attributed to autohesive bond formation at the ply interfaces. Autohesive bond formation is controlled by two mechanisms (1) intimate contact at the ply interfaces, and (2) diffusion of the polymer chains across the interface (healing). The rate of autohesive bond formation and hence the speed of the composite consolidation process is directly related to the temperature-pressure-time processing cycle. [Pg.236]

Consolidation and development of interlaminar bond strength for thermoplastic matrix composites have been modeled by two mechanisms intimate contact and autohesion. Intimate contact describes the process by which two irregular ply surfaces become smooth (Fig. 13.10). In areas in which the ply surfaces are in contact, autohesion occurs, and the long thermoplastic polymer chains diffuse across the ply boundaries. Filament winding with thermoplastic matrix materials is considered an on-line consolidation process in that local... [Pg.404]

Many wood species, both hardwoods and softwoods, are used for particleboard however, the density of the particleboard should be higher than the density of the raw material to efficiently utilize the adhesive system. The compression of the particles, which is required for consolidation into the finished product, enhances the particle-particle contact, producing more inter-particle adhesive bonds as well as reducing the total void volume in the panel. With wood of density higher than the finished particleboard, the compression of the particles is lower and the resultant reduced interparticle contact and higher void volume adversely influence the physical and mechanical properties of the parti cleboard. [Pg.229]

The final tablet properties are also affected by the consolidation (i.e., bonding) mechanisms of the powder which is influenced by its chemical nature, the surface area of the contact points, contamination (including film coatings such as magnesium stearate), and interparticle distance. The predominant consolidation mechanisms are listed below ... [Pg.3612]

The mechanism of TFS action as a consolidation additive in these environments is a little different there is a hydrolysis of TFS with formation of an orthosilicic acid and FA [4], Inorganic cement fills the saddles between globules of silica gel. An increase of the contact area leads to significant growth of durability, and in so doing, compensates for strength reduction due to etching a matrix by hydrofluoric acid. In that way, TFS essentially reduces the diffusive penetration of water and weak acids and allows use of SPC for reinforced structures without special protection of a reinforcement. [Pg.131]

ABSTRACT The paper provides the results of experimental study of structural transformation in clay on its deformation promoting changes in its physical and physico-mechanical properties. The processes on the contacts of structural elements are considered, as well as clay structure transformation upon ground consolidation, shear and swelling. It is pointed out that these structural changes should be taken into account when working out soil models for engineering calculations. [Pg.35]
