Congruence test

On the basis of such considerations, they have classified stereo-differentiating reactions into six types. While the terminology used is readily understandable, some comments on prochiral distinctions are in order. The congruence test tells us nothing about the quality of a single hypothesis of homology. If there are conflicts in the form of homoplasies, then the source of errors has to be examined... 

Therefore, the congruence test does not have the power that Patterson (1982), and other cladists, have claimed for it and cannot replace a priori character analysis. Kluge and Farris (1969), for example, included in their analysis of anuran evolution long paragraphs with a priori character analyses where the selection and quality of characters is discussed. 

Remane s three auxiliary criteria (see above) are concerned with the coincidence of characters (Wagner, 1986 152), considered related to, or even synonymous with, Patterson s congruence test (Patterson, 1982 Bock, 1989 336 Schmitt, 1995 Haszpruner, 1998) and often associated with the discovery of taxic homology (Donoghue, 1992 173 Brower and Schawaroch, 1996 Sluys, 1996 Haszpruner, 1998 Donoghue and Ree, 2000 760). That viewpoint presupposes that taxic homology is discovered from data organized prior to analysis.

Commonly the absence of systematic errors is tested by recovery studies. The estimation of recovery by analyzing only one standard, as frequently be done, can give misleading results as can be seen from Fig. 4.2. In case of combined and nonlinear systematic deviations there can occur points of accidental congruence that can be hit. A rule of logic is that first principles cannot be tested by deductions that themselves rely on the same first principles. An important issue is, therefore, the question of whether the probability that a character is a homology can be estimated using a cladistic analysis, that is, if it is possible to identify homologies a posteriori (Patterson s test of congruence). The answer is complex (Wagele, 2000).
