Semi-submersible rigs are often referred to as semis , and are a floating type of rig. Like the jack-up, a semi is self contained. The structure is supported by large pontoons which are ballasted with water to provide the required stability and height. The rig is held in position by anchors and mooring lines or dynamically positioned by thrusters. A large diameter steel pipe ( riser ) is connected to the sea-bed and serves as a conduit for the drill string. The blowout preventer (BOP) is also located at the sea-bed ( sub sea stack ).

TWo additional observations can be made. First, because a rigid pipe transmits almost all the load of the earth cover to the trench bed, someone will occasionally be heard to say that rigid pipe, such as concrete pipe, does not require side support. This is not true. Accomplishments should be advertised and rewarded. Establishing well-defined processes empowers employee involvement, participation, and contribution to the organization. However, not all materials can be heated rapidly by microwaves. Materials are reflected from the surfaee and therefore do not heat metals. Metals in general have high conductivity and are classed as conductors. Conductors are often used as conduits (waveguide) for mierowaves. Materials which are transparent to microwaves are classed as insulators. Insulators are often used in microwave ovens to support the material to be heated. Materials whieh are excellent absorbers of microwave energy are easily used and are classed as dielectric.
