Concerted multidisciplinary approach

In the foregoing we have presented a general framework for sustainable polymer reaction engineering. Its most important characteristic lies in the concerted multidisciplinary approach, rather than focusing on individual competencies. Given the volume of polymer production, it will be of major importance that environmental and safety issues become an integral part of the development process. In combination with tools such as life cycle analysis and product-inspired PRE, this will allow the development of sustainable new polymer processes. 

Generally, the description of function in RCs is limited to the cofactors (pigments and redox centers). Apart from scaffolding, what are the roles of the protein How are its structural changes coupled to electron transfer In order to receive satisfying answers, all of these basic questions will require concerted multidisciplinary approaches in the future. 

Thus the rapidly developing molecular approaches may help us obtain more-realistic ingestion rates of Phaeocystis and other live prey in situ. However, to further reveal and quantify mechanisms controlling the complex trophic interactions between Phaeocystis and its predators, new approaches need to be developed. In concert with the recent review by Pohnert (2004) we conclude that such development will probably be as complex as the interactions it tries to reveal. Developing successful innovative approaches and better quantitative analytical tools will depend largely upon multidisciplinary efforts between chemists, molecular biologists and plankton ecologists.
