Concept creation

Studying aspects of chemistry often includes grouping together some chemical materials with. similarities of behaviour. This is what we mean by concept creation. The concept of acidity is one of these. In chemistry teaching at this stage, teachers do not normally use the acids directly, but make use of their aqueous solutions. Studying. similarities of acidic behaviour means that we must include examples of non-acids to be sure that the learners can recognise the difference between the observed behaviour and materials that do not behave in this way. The two reactions chosen are ... [Pg.185]

So far, the emphasis has been on concept creation, roughly following the route of history. This brings us to around the eighteenth century. French chemist Nicolas Lemery (1645-1715) was born in Rouen and was one of the first scientists to develop theories on acid-base chemistry. By a theory, I mean a causal explanation that makes sense of all, or as much as possible, of the data that has been collected to date. The theory should be able to predict new information that can be collected and tested for compatibility. Earlier in this chapter I called this fertility . A theory of acidity should ej lain why all the members of the class of acids behave as they do and why the nonmembers do not. When chemists construct a theory, they may find that minor alterations are required. This is called accommodation and is felt to be natural in the development of a theory. If, however, there comes a point where accommodation cannot explain a large portion of the new evidence, a new explanation is created. This is called a paradigm shift and the topic of acidity offers examples of it that will be explored later. [Pg.192]

Of course, there is much more to know about technical safety concept creation, e.g. how to care about latent faults, how to ensure freedom from interference etc. so the recommendation for companies that are confronted with functional safety for the first time is to ask for consultancy by experienced experts. The TSC is the place where the most mistakes can occur to the author s experience. [Pg.529]

This text will attempt to develop an understanding of the concepts required at each stage during the creation of a chemical process design. [Pg.3]

Unlike the common practice occurring in other countries, in which award of patent rights is based on the date on which a patent apphcation is filed, in the United States the patent grant is based on the first date of invention. To be an inventor in the United States, an individual must contribute to conception of the invention, and may contribute to reduction of the invention to practice. Although the creation of an advance, development, or apphcation may be conceived by one given individual, it often is the case that the act of invention is the work of many individuals, especially in a commercial context. Accordingly, inventorship questions often arise. [Pg.30]

Up to this point we have addressed primarily the flaw structure and energy concepts in stress-wave loaded solids governing the creation of new fracture surface area (or the mean fragment size) in catastrophic fragmentation events. It remains to consider a concept which is frequently the end concern in impulsive fracture applications, namely, the distribution in sizes of the particles produced in the dynamic fragmentation event. [Pg.295]

The concept of an invisible college , mentioned by Ziman, is the creation of Derek de Sofia Price, an influential historian of science and herald of scientomet-rics (Yagi et al. 1996), who wrote at length about such colleges and their role in the scientific enterprise (Price 1963, 1986). Price was one of the first to apply quantitative... [Pg.21]

We admire human creation second - The Beatles and Bob Dylan, heroes from the sixties whose music and lyrics changed a whole generation. In the twenties Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee were among the artists who changed our conception of art. [Pg.1]

Whether this concept can stand up under a rigorous psychological analysis has never been discussed, at least in the literature of theoretical physics. It may even be inconsistent with quantum mechanics in that the creation of a finite mass is equivalent to the creation of energy that, by the uncertainty principle, requires a finite time A2 A h. Thus the creation of an electron would require a time of the order 10 20 second. Higher order operations would take more time, and the divergences found in quantum field theory due to infinite series of creation operations would spread over an infinite time, and so be quite unphysical. [Pg.450]

We can consider the spreading of a sessile drop on a soft, lossy substrate rather like the advance of a negative crack and thus use fracture mechanics concepts, as was the case in the derivation of Eq. (15) for the separation of an elastomer from a rigid solid. The term negative is used since the spreading of a drop leads to the creation of solid/liquid interface rather than separation. [Pg.295]

The list of normalized terms, synonyms and local terms for each concept type (e.g., DISEASES—COMPANIES—TARGETS—PRODUCTS— MODES OF ACTION) in each source, as deemed relevant for the creation of the UltraLink... [Pg.738]

When the user clicks on an identified concept the UltraLink creation process is called and displays a menu of possible links. Figure 31.2C shows the list of links that are generated at run time when the user clicks on Psoriasis (second document in the hit list in Fig. 31.2A), which has been classified as a disease. It can clearly be seen how the internal logical structures from the previous section are exposed to the user when calling the UltraLink (Fig. 31.2, B and C). [Pg.742]

Especially the favorable mass transfer of micro reactors is seen to be advantageous for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol [58]. As one key to this property, the setting and knowledge on flow patterns are mentioned. Owing to the special type of microreactor used, mixing in a mini trickle bed (gas/liquid flows over a packed particle bed) and creation of large specific interfaces are special aspects of the reactor concept. In addition, temperature can be controlled easily and heat transfer is large, as the whole micro-reactor construction acts as a heat sink. [Pg.642]
