Chemically, arsenic is complex in that it can exist in a variety of forms including trivalent and pentavalent or as arsenic trioxide (computer chip manufacture) and arsenic acid. Arsenic is excreted in skin cells, sweat, hair, and fingernails, which can be seen as white transverse bands. Acute exposure to arsenic results in gastrointestinal pain, sensory loss, cardiovascular failure, and death. Chronic exposure or survival of acute exposure can cause loss of peripheral sensory function and loss of central nervous system function. Chronic arsenic exposure can also cause cancer of the lung and skin (see the chapter on arsenic). [Pg.126]

The selection of a treatment process for industrial and municipal wastewater and for industrial coohng, purging or product waters depends mainly on the specific use and the desired water quality. If necessary, it should include UV disinfection, UV detoxification, or UV purification. On the other hand, the production of pure and ultra pure water for pharmaceutical purposes or of cleaning water for computer chip manufacturing industries requires disinfection and total mineralization of the organic matter content (Bendlin, 1995). [Pg.22]

With proper safety procedures, radiation can be very useful in many scientific experiments. Neutron activation analysis is used to detect trace amounts of elements present in a sample. Computer chip manufacturers use this technique to analyze the composition of highly purified silicon wafers. In the process, the sample is bombarded with a beam of neutrons from a radioactive source, causing some of the atoms in the sample to become radioactive. The type of radiation emitted by the sample is used to determine the types and quantities of elements present. Neutron activation analysis is a very sensitive measurement technique capable of detecting quantities of less than 1 X 10 9 g. [Pg.828]

Studies on the experimental conditions created by the photo-produced acidic media reveal values from -15 all the way to -30. Thus, the modern day process of computer chip manufacturing relies heavily on the production of extremely strong acids, which generate acidities that can only be measured using acidity function scales. [Pg.269]

Usually the construction of a microsized analytical system has components for the following functions sample injection, preparation, separation, and detection. The fabrication of these devices has been facilitated by the application of techniques that were originally developed for computing chip manufacture. While current techniques for computer devices can make features at the nanometer level, for microfabricated analytical devices the usual feature dimensions are more likely at the micron level. [Pg.181]
