In the mid-1990s, the BPR debate drew our attention from isolated business activities to entire value chains. Yet entire process management in most of the cases focused on the information flow within departmental, corporate, or national boundaries. Obstacles within those areas appeared hard enough to cope with. Therefore, interoiganizational communication and cooperation were seldom seriously put on the improvement agenda. Consequently, enterprise models, particularly business process models were also restricted to interoiganizational aspects. [Pg.306]

In such a future scenario, the industry will be called upon to justify not only their economic objectives but also explicitly consider environmental (and social) objectives. This shift from the solely fiscally-driven business plans to the triple bottom-line business plan will propel the marked shift in corporate function. To be successful, the change in corporate orientation must encompass the entire value chain with free flow of communication across the traditional boundaries and interphases with suppliers, customers, and waste managers. This cannot be achieved by a few analysts embedded within a single department but requires champions that represent aU aspects of the value chain. [Pg.342]

The research community has responded to the E-Business challenge. Despite the infamous dot-com bust in the early 2000 s, scores of research initiatives, workshops, technical papers, and special journal issues have been devoted to the subject. E-Business remains a critical subject not only in the research community, but also in corporate boardrooms. Instead of the revolution that would replace every facet of business, the rise of E-Business might be viewed as the emergence of new economic intermediaries that offer opportunities for innovation. These new intermediaries offer different means to respond to market demands (e.g., Internet vs. traditional channels), to facilitate sourcing, procurement, and price discovery (e.g., electronic auctions), and to develop new mechanisms for coordination and execution (e.g., dynamic pricing, revenue management, and collaborative forecasting). [Pg.4]
