Commissioning organization

The Commission, established in October 1974, is in practice responsible to the Secretary of State for Employment for taking appropriate steps to secure the health, safety and welfare of people at work, and to protect the public generally against risks to health and safety arising out of work situations. A Chairman is af inted by the Secretary of State for Employment. The membership of the Commission <6 or up to 9 members) includes representatives of employers, trade unions, local authorities, and other interested bodies and provides a forum for the development of policies in the field of health and safety at work. The Commission organizes widespread consultation on all aspects of health and safety and is advised by a number of Advisory Committees and working parties, as well as by the expertise and committees of its executive arm, the Health and Safety Executive. The Commission is responsible for the legislation and codes of practice. [Pg.79]

It should be noted that in the EU, socioeconomics is at the heart of many policies. Therefore, the GIF broad area 3 (Section 10.3) Economics should cover a wider domain than just economics—ideally it should be renamed Socioeconomics. In this context, it should be recalled that, in view of their decision on the Euratom part of Horizon-2020, the EU Council (Council meeting of June 28, 2011) requested that the Commission organize a symposium in 2013 on the benefits and limitations of nuclear fission for a low carbon economy. The symposium will be prepared by... [Pg.255]

At the international level, the official organization is the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and its counterpart for the electrical industries, the lEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). [Pg.295]

All these organizations have developed numerous working procedures, with very little difference between each other. These procedures seem at first heavy and cumbersome, but following them allows a consensus to be reached. Thus, for example, free access for all to the standardization commissions work is guaranteed, and the existence of lobbies is avoided. [Pg.296]

A Macromolecular Division of lUPAC was created in 1967, and it created a permanent Commission on Macromolecular Nomenclature, parallel to the other nomenclature commissions. The Commission over the years has issued recommendations on basic definitions, stereochemical definitions and notations, stmcture-based nomenclature for regular single-strand organic polymers and regular single-strand and quasisingle-strand inorganic and coordination polymers, source-based nomenclature for copolymers, and abbreviations for polymers. AH of these are coUected in a compendium referred to as the lUPAC Purple Book (99). [Pg.120]

Sediment Toxicity. Because of their low solubiUty ia water and lipophilic nature, phthalates tend to be found ia sediments. Unfortunately httle work has previously been carried out on the toxicity of phthalates to sediment dwelling organisms. Eor this reason ECPI has commissioned some sediment toxicity studies designed to measure the effect of DEHP and DIDP ia a natural river sediment on the emergence of the larvae of the midge, Chironomus riparius. [Pg.133]
