Commingled collection

The primary disadvantage of commingled collection is that municipalities must operate a different collection system for recyclables than for other household and commercial waste. The success of these new collection programs is highly dependent on pubHc participation. As a result, the amount of waste collected in commingled systems may be small. 

In order to determine the total cost of curbside collection (for plastics as well as other recyclabies), it is necessary to add the above incremental plastics collection costs to the costs associated with curbside collection if plastics were not included. Also, there will be additional cost for performing sorting, baling and granulating even though the above stated costs include curbside sortation (in comparison to commingled collection). 

Commingled collection All waste is commingled and collected by a single truck. Recyclable materials are sorted and processed by mechanical means including magnets and shredders. This method is sometimes called front-end processing or refuse-derived fuel processing. 

Preparation of Collected Materials. The actual amount of recovered MSW that can be recycled to meet buyers quaUty specifications is highly dependent upon how the material is collected and processed. There are primarily three methods available to collect MSW for recycling mixed waste, waste with commingled recyclables, or waste with separated recyclables. Which method of collection is chosen, in turn, determines the amount of preparation that is needed prior to reclamation and reuse.

Still, the demand for recycled plastics is low, mainly due to a general uncertainty of the quality of the recycled material. The possibility of offering high quality recycled polymeric materials relays on a reliable and selective collection and sorting, an efficient recycling process and of course an available end-market. The basic technological development, thus, lies in the development of fast, reliable and relatively cheap methods for characterisation of separated and commingled plastic fractions. Recently, it was demonstrated that separation, at home, of a very small amount of products can mean a decreased use of raw oil and less emission of CO2 to the environment [11]. If... 

Special collection systems are generally provided for large-scale or commercial postconsumer applications such as for agricultural films, chemical containers, automotive parts, carpets, and polystyrene foam packaging. Since most of the plastic is collected as multimaterial or in commingled forms, the collected plastic waste has to be sorted, separated, and cleaned, and most of this is done at material recovery facilities (MRFs). 

Excess asphalt concrete is disposed of in landfills or sometimes in the right of way. Energy-efficient collection transport contributes heavily to the energy consumption and cost of recycling operations, especially for commingled waste recycling. 

Systems in which consumers set out commingled recyclables at the curb can be further divided into three categories, depending on how the materials are handled in the collection vehicle. 

Collect the recyclables in at least partially commingled form and require little if any preparation beyond cleaning.
