Plastics, commercial properties

The sales brochures of the manufacturers describe the plasticizer range alcohols available on the merchant market (18). Typical properties of several commercial plasticizer range alcohols are presented in Table 8. Because in most cases these ate mixtures of isomers or alcohols with several carbon chains, the properties of a particular material can vary somewhat from manufacturer to manufacturer. Both odd and even carbon chain alcohols are available, in both linear and highly branched versions. Examples of the composition of several mixtures are given in Table 9.

Fiber Slurry Pipelines. Pipelines to carry suspensions of wood, paper, sludge, etc, have found commercial acceptance. Most of them are less than 15 km long but have diameters of up to 500 mm. These slurries are often concentrated and display viscous plastic properties, although particle sizes may vary special pumps are used. One such hydrotransport system carries a cellulose slurry by pipeline from the plant to a paper plant near Heidenau, Germany. The 250-mm dia pipeline carries 60 t/d over the 3-km distance to thickeners. In Sweden, a 3.7-km, 500-mm dia pipeline moves cellulose by... 

There are at the present time many thousands of grades of commercial plastics materials offered for sale throughout the world. Only rarely are the properties of any two of these grades identical, for although the number of chemically distinct species (e.g. polyethylenes, polystyrenes) is limited, there are many variations within each group. Such variations can arise through differences in molecular structure, differences in physical form, the presence of impurities and also in the nature and amount of additives which may have been incorporated into the base polymer. One of the aims of this book is to show how the many different materials arise, to discuss their properties and to show how these properties can to a large extent be explained by consideration of the composition of a plastics material and in particular the molecular structure of the base polymer employed.

It allows preselection or screening of materials, suitable for specific applications, from a worldwide range of commercial plastics, while continuously being developed further with respect to its properties base. CAMPUS is based on two international standards for comparable data, that use meaningful properties based on unambiguous selection of specimen types... 

Asbestos It is not the name of a distinct mineral species but is a commercial term applied to fibrous varieties of several silicate minerals such as amosite and crocido-lite. These extremely fine fibers are useful as fillers and/or reinforcements in plastics. Property performances include withstanding wear and high temperatures, chemical resistance, and strengths with high modulus of elasticity. When not properly handled or used, like other fibrous materials, they can be hazardous.
