Column pedestals

When considering placement of reinforcing bars relative to the anchor, it may be necessary to explicitly consider the effect of the secondary moment caused by the couple between the anchor and the rebar. Alternatively, the reinforcing can be placed symmetrically around the anchor as shown in Figure 3.6. For typical cases where anchors are embedded in the tops of structural column pedestals it is generally not required that the reinforcing be placed symmetrically around the bolt, because the secondary moments can be accommodated within the section depth. 

If, as in the case of a column pedestal, there is insufficient concrete to resist the tension or shear, reinforcing steel can be designed as anchor reinforcement. (See 3.5.) This can be considered a ductile design since both the anchor and the reinforcing steel are ductile. 

Anticipate, therefore, in your design, the worst load conditions and plan for them. Under column supports or tank pedestals where heavy loading is anticipated, do not use soft membranes, and plan instead on bonded construction. Where you are concerned only with traffic and standing loaded vehicles, be sure that you have adequate brick thickness to accommodate it without breaking up. 

In Figure 7-86b, the 2-1/2-inch section is installed with two 1-inch elbow adapters in the horizontal with one connection for the indicating thermometer and the other for a duplex thermowell containing a thermocouple and a 3/8-inch diameter thermobulb for a temperature transmitter. If vibration is likely to be transmitted in the piping, the transmitter should not be supported from the process piping but instead mounted on a building column, wall or from a floor pedestal.

The veiled Tholos trompe I oeil in Bedroom M of the Villa of Publius Fannius Synistor at Boscoreale, near Pompeii, shows the melissae priestesses as a swarm of bees on a pedestal in the foreground. Nearby is the dour goddess Hecate between two columns. The frescos are now in New York s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The concrete pedestal and anchorage embedments for the Reactor Vessel Support columns are not subjected to significant neutron flux. These items are not, therefore, addressed in the above analysis.
