Color glazes

This dissociated zircon is amenable to hot aqueous caustic leaching to remove the siHca in the form of soluble sodium siHcate. The remaining skeletal stmcture of zirconia is readily washed to remove residual caustic. Purity of this zirconia is direcdy related to the purity of the starting zircon since only siHca, phosphate, and trace alkaHes and alkaline earth are removed during the leach. This zirconia, and the untreated dissociated zircon, are both proposed for use in ceramic color glazes (36) (see Colorants for ceramics). [Pg.430]

Glanz-erz, n. argentite graphite, -farbe, /. brilliant color glazing varnish gloss ink. [Pg.186]

Colored glazes are made with the addition of nearly pure oxides of manganese, copper, iron, chromium, cobalt, et cetera ) opaque glasses, ot enamels, by the addition of oxide of tin, or phosphate of lime for which see Porcelain True and Earthenware, Some of the ordinary lead glazes for soft porcelain are given below —... [Pg.793]

Pottery with colored glazes, representing vessels with animals or figures in relief. [Pg.347]

To provide colored glazes, the following compounds can be added (The percentages are by mass.) for brown, 5 to 10% iron oxide, for blue, 5 to 10% copper carbonate, for blue-green, 1.0% cobalt oxide. [Pg.174]

Antimony compounds have been used by humans for centuries. Women of ancient Egypt used stibic stone, antimony sulfide (Sb2S3), to darken the skin around their eyes. Antimony was also used in making colored glazes for beads and glassware. The chemical symbol for antimony was taken from the ancient name for the element, stibium. Not recognized as a chemical element until the Middle Ages, antimony became a common material used by alchemists. [Pg.19]

The ionic compound sometimes called uranium yellow is used to produce colored glazes for ceramics. It is 7.252% sodium, 75.084% uranium, and 17.664% oxygen. Wliat is the empirical formula for this compound ... [Pg.363]

The flux in a glaze is a modifier in glass. The clear glaze is glass i.e., silica and alumina with added modifiers. The clear glaze may contain lead but Pb should not be used for modern food containers. Strong colored glazes also often contain heavy metals. [Pg.390]

Colored glazes must use stable ceramic pigments if the color is to be consistent over repeated batches (e.g., for industrial production of sanitaryware, tiles, etc.). Cheaper metal oxide colorants can be used when... [Pg.391]

Antiquing (i)an- tek (1923) n. (1) Treating or finishing of wood to make it look old. (2) Imparting a special coloring effect by the application of a base coat followed by a transparent or semitransparent colored glaze, which is either applied by brush. [Pg.61]
