Colloid principles

Over thousands of years for writing, the ancient people used naturally occurring colloidal fine material from ash (mostly charcoal) dispersed in oil (olive oil). Modem inkjet printers employing color are based on much more sophisticated components. Inkjet printers have a number of nozzles that inject ink droplets on the surface of paper. Simultaneously, different colors are mixed to obtain the desired color shade (more than hundreds of thousands). In a typical printer, there may be 30,000 injections per second, and there may be more than 500 nozzles (each with a size less than a human hair (pm =10 6 m). (The ink has a shelf life of more than a year.) In this process, the surface and colloidal principles most obvious are... 

It is thus seen that surface and colloidal principles are involved in a much complex manner in these printers.

As mentioned earlier, it is not uncommon for emulsion droplets to have diameters well above the accepted colloid size range. However, even in this case colloid principles are of fundamental importance when one considers the problem of droplet coalescence in the destruction of emulsions (de-emulsijication). Here the medium between two approaching droplets is progressively thinned, and before coalescence can occur it is reduced to a film of colloidal thickness (see Chapter 12). 

A number of kinds of active dressings have been developed that take advantage of surface and/or colloidal principles and systems. Some of them are fairly simple. For example, silver-coated fibres have been used to contribute antimicrobial and antifungal properties into bioactive fibre bandages, which work through direct contact with wound exudate [48,49].
